Thatta and the sites around it make one of the easiest heritage day trips from Karachi: the Chaukhandi Tombs, the Makli Necropolis, the Shah Jahan Mosque and Keenjhar Lake all sit within about two hours of the city, strung out along the same road. Done as a single long day, you can cover all four, leaving Karachi by 7 am and getting back after dark. Done more comfortably, pick two or three and stay unhurried.
This guide lays out the route, realistic timings, where to eat, and how to trim the day if it's too much to fit in comfortably.

The route, in order
All four sites sit on or just off the N-5 heading north-east out of Karachi towards Hyderabad, in this order:
- Chaukhandi Tombs, about 30 km from central Karachi, just off the highway.
- Banbhore, the ruins of an ancient port city, a further stretch along the N-5, roughly 65 km from Karachi.
- Makli Necropolis and the Shah Jahan Mosque, both in Thatta, about 100 km from Karachi.
- Keenjhar Lake, about 20 to 30 km beyond Thatta on the same highway.
That order means you're moving steadily further from Karachi and can turn back at whichever point suits your day, rather than backtracking.
A full-day plan
- Leave Karachi by 7 am. Traffic on the way out of the city, not the drive itself, is what eats the morning.
- Chaukhandi Tombs, about 30 to 45 minutes in. A quick stop, half an hour is enough unless you want to look closely at the carving. Our Chaukhandi Tombs guide covers what to look for.
- Straight on towards Thatta, reaching the Makli Necropolis by mid-morning. Give Makli at least two hours: it's a large, exposed site and rewards an unhurried look. Our Makli visitor guide sets out a route across the tombs.
- The Shah Jahan Mosque, a short drive from Makli, on the way back towards the highway. Thirty to forty-five minutes covers the courtyard and tilework; our Shah Jahan Mosque guide has more detail.
- Lunch in Thatta or on the way to Keenjhar. A few simple restaurants operate around the town and along the highway; nothing fancy, but reliable for rice, karahi or fish.
- Keenjhar Lake in the afternoon, for a boat ride and grilled fish from the shore. Our Keenjhar Lake guide covers the lake itself, and our Keenjhar Lake resort guide is useful if you'd rather stay the night than drive back.
- Head back to Karachi by mid-to-late afternoon, so most of the return drive is in daylight.
If Banbhore's ancient port ruins and museum interest you more than a second stop at the lake, it fits neatly into the same route between Chaukhandi and Thatta; see our Banbhore guide.
Trimming the day
Fitting all four sites into one day works, but it's a long one, especially with children or older relatives. A few ways to shorten it:
- Cut Keenjhar and finish at the Shah Jahan Mosque. This keeps the day to about six or seven hours and still covers the two most significant heritage sites.
- Cut Chaukhandi and Banbhore and go straight to Thatta, if history on a grand scale (Makli and the mosque) matters more to you than smaller sites along the way.
- Stay overnight at Keenjhar instead of driving back, and finish the loop the next morning. It turns a rushed day into a relaxed two.
- Split it over two days if you're travelling with young children or anyone who tires on long car journeys.
Food stops
Don't expect much beyond simple highway food between Karachi and Thatta. A few reliable options:
- Highway dhabas along the N-5, for tea, parathas and basic meals, useful for an early breakfast on the way out.
- The Shah Jehan Restaurant, run by the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation in Thatta, serves straightforward meals near the main sites.
- Fish at Keenjhar, grilled or fried fresh from the lake, sold from stalls along the shore, mainly on weekends and holidays.
Carry water and snacks for children regardless. Facilities thin out quickly once you're off the highway.
When to go
November to March is by far the most comfortable window. Makli and the mosque involve walking on open, largely shadeless ground, and the heat from April to October, especially by midday, is hard going, particularly for children and older visitors. If you can only go in summer, start earlier still and plan to be at Makli before 9 am.
Weekdays are quieter at every stop on this route. Keenjhar in particular gets crowded on Sundays and public holidays.
Is this trip worth doing in one day?
For a first visit to lower Sindh, yes, and it's one of the best value day trips within reach of Karachi: four very different sites, from carved tombs to a Mughal mosque to a lake, on one road. Anyone with a real interest in history is better served giving Makli its own half day rather than rushing it as one stop among four.
If you have two days rather than one, staying a night at Keenjhar and covering the heritage sites the following morning makes for a much less rushed trip. Frequently asked questions
Can you visit Thatta, Makli and Keenjhar Lake in one day from Karachi?
Yes. All three, plus the Chaukhandi Tombs, can be covered in one long day of about 10 to 12 hours if you leave Karachi by 7 am. It's a full day, so trim the list if you're travelling with young children or older relatives.
How far is Thatta from Karachi?
About 100 km, roughly two hours by road on the N-5 National Highway. Keenjhar Lake is a further 20 to 30 km beyond Thatta on the same road.
What is the best time of year for a Thatta day trip?
November to March. The sites involve walking on open ground with little shade, and the heat from April to October makes a full day uncomfortable, especially at midday.
Where can you eat on a Thatta day trip?
Simple highway dhabas along the N-5, a restaurant run by the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation in Thatta, and stalls selling grilled fish at Keenjhar Lake. Don't expect much beyond that, and carry your own water and snacks.
Do you need a guide for Makli or the Shah Jahan Mosque?
Not strictly, but local guides at Makli's entrance can help you find specific tombs quickly on a site with few signs. Agree the fee and how long you'll spend together before you start.
