Six days is enough to see the best of Swat and reach Kumrat as well, if you pick one of two ways to link them: back down to Chakdara and up the Dir road, or the Badgoi Pass jeep crossing direct from Kalam. Both work; which one suits you depends on your vehicle and how much you mind a rough road for the sake of a shorter, more direct route.
This itinerary gives three days each side, with both linking options set out so you can choose.

Day 1: Arrive in Swat
Travel to Mingora, and settle in either there or push on to Bahrain or Kalam if you want to be closer to the upper valley from the start. Use the afternoon for an easy first day: a walk around Mingora, or a short drive up to Malam Jabba if it is on your route.
Day 2: Upper Swat
Spend the day in the Bahrain–Kalam stretch of the valley, with its riverside meadows and pine forest. This is also the day to decide which link route you are taking to Kumrat, since it changes tomorrow's plan.
Day 3: To Kumrat, by road or by pass
By the Dir road: drive back down to Chakdara, then north on the N-45 through Timergara towards Dir, turning off before the town into the Panjkora valley for Thal. By Badgoi Pass: from Kalam, a 4x4 jeep crossing via Utror and over the pass to Thal, shorter in distance but slower going and open only roughly from late June or July to October. See our Kalam to Kumrat via Badgoi Pass guide before committing to this option.
Either way, arrive in Thal in the evening and stay there rather than pushing on into the forest in the dark.
Day 4: Kumrat forest
A full day in the forest around Thal: Kumrat waterfall, Kala Chashma and a walk along the river. Move to a forest camp for the night if you want to be closer to the river than Thal itself allows. Our Kumrat Valley guide covers how the valley is laid out.
Day 5: Jahaz Banda, or a second easy day
Fit groups can take a jeep to Taki Top and trek up to Jahaz Banda meadow for a long day out, back down to Thal or the forest camp by evening. Day 6: Return journey
Head back the way you drove in, whichever link route you used, or via the other one if your vehicle and the season allow it and you want to see fresh ground on the way out. Build extra time into this day rather than the earlier ones, since both link routes are affected by weather and are slower than their distance on a map suggests.
Which link route should you take?
The Dir road works for most vehicles, most of the year, and is the safer default if you are not confident about mountain jeep tracks or the season is outside high summer. The Badgoi Pass is shorter and more of an adventure in its own right, but it needs a 4x4, a driver who knows the pass, and a season when it is actually open. If in doubt, take the Dir road in and, if conditions allow, the pass on the way out, so you see both without depending on the pass being open for your whole trip.
Who this itinerary suits
Groups who are comfortable with two long driving days either side of a quieter middle, and who are happy adjusting the Jahaz Banda day depending on fitness and weather. It does not suit anyone trying to also fit in Katora Lake; that trek needs an extra night at altitude and is better planned as its own trip. Is this route safe?
The UK government's Pakistan travel advice, updated 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Swat, Lower Dir and Upper Dir, which together cover this entire itinerary. On 16 July 2026, militants attacked a police search operation in the Laram Top area of Lower Dir, near the Dir road link route, killing three officers and injuring fifteen. Pakistani travellers continue to make this trip through the summer season, but check current local news and police advice before you go, and if you hold a foreign passport, check your own government's advice, since it can affect travel insurance.
