The drive from Swat to Kumrat Valley runs south out of the Swat valley to Chakdara, then north again up the Panjkora valley through Timergara and Dir to Thal, the last village before the Kumrat forest. From Mingora it is a full half-day's drive, longer than the straight-line distance suggests, because the valley road beyond Dir is narrow and slow.

The route stage by stage
- Mingora to Chakdara, about 40 km on the N-45, a quick run south down the Swat valley.
- Chakdara to Timergara, close to 40 km further along the N-45, past Chakdara Fort and the Dir Museum if you want a stop.
- Timergara towards Dir, continuing on the N-45 through Lower Dir into Upper Dir.
- The turn for Kumrat, short of Dir town, where the road leaves the N-45 and drops into the Panjkora valley towards Sheringal.
- Sheringal to Kalkot to Thal, the slowest section: a narrower valley road that mixes old tarmac with gravel and patched sections, winding along the river.
- Thal onward, where a hired jeep is needed for the forest track to the camps, Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma.
How long it actually takes
Mingora to Chakdara is quick, well under an hour on a normal day. From Chakdara, allow four to five hours to Thal: the road is fine as far as the Dir turn-off, but the valley stretch through Sheringal and Kalkot is where the time goes, regardless of the distance on a map. Altogether, budget five to six hours of driving from Mingora to Thal, and treat any faster estimate you read online with caution, since the state of this road changes with rain and repair work.
Add another hour or two by jeep from Thal if you are heading into the forest itself rather than stopping in the village.
Stops worth making on the way

Driving this route yourself
A normal car manages the whole route to Thal in dry weather, but the last stretch rewards a driver who knows mountain roads and is not tired from an early start. Fill up in Timergara or Dir, since fuel becomes less reliable further up the valley, and don't plan to arrive after dark: the Sheringal to Thal section is not a road to learn in the headlights. If you would rather not drive it yourself, hired cars with local drivers can be arranged in Mingora or Chakdara for the day.
Is this route safe?
The UK government's Pakistan travel advice, updated 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Swat, Lower Dir and Upper Dir, which together cover this entire route. On 16 July 2026, militants attacked a police search operation in the Laram Top area of Lower Dir, a short distance off this road, killing three officers and injuring fifteen. Pakistani travellers continue to drive this route to Kumrat through the summer, but check current local news and police advice before you set out, and overseas visitors should check their own government's advice, since it can affect travel insurance.
