Five days is enough to see Kumrat's forest, trek to Jahaz Banda and climb on to Katora Lake without rushing any of it. This itinerary gives you a settling day in Thal, two nights at altitude, and a spare margin for the weather and the road, both of which can move a Kumrat trip around at short notice.

It assumes a reasonably fit group willing to camp for two nights, hire jeeps for the rough sections, and walk five to seven hours on the longest day.

Day 1: Travel to Thal

Most groups arrive from Islamabad, Peshawar or Swat, and the drive itself takes most of the day once you are on the slow valley road beyond Dir. Sleep in Thal, the last proper village before the forest, so you start the trek fresh rather than tacking it onto a long drive. Our Islamabad to Kumrat Valley route guide covers the drive in stages if that is where you are starting from.

Day 2: Jeep to Taki Top, trek to Jahaz Banda

Hire a jeep in Thal for the ride up through Lamoti and Jandrai to Taki Top, the roadhead, about an hour to ninety minutes away. From there the walk to Jahaz Banda meadow, at around 3,100 metres, takes a few hours through forest and open slopes. Camp or take a hut at Jahaz Banda for the night. Our Jahaz Banda trek guide has the route in full.

Day 3: Katora Lake and back to Jahaz Banda

This is the long day. The climb from Jahaz Banda to Katora Lake takes three to four hours over increasingly steep, loose ground, and there is nowhere to sleep at the lake, so you come back down to camp at Jahaz Banda again the same night. Start early, carry more water than you think you need, and be ready to turn back if the weather closes in. See our Katora Lake trek guide for what the climb involves.

Day 4: Down to Thal via Kala Chashma

Trek back down to Taki Top and take the jeep to Thal, with a stop on the way at Kala Chashma, the cold spring most day visitors picnic at, and at Kumrat waterfall nearby. This is a shorter day than the two before it, and a good one to keep loose if anyone in the group is tired or the group wants to rest instead. Sleep in Thal or at one of the forest camps closer to the river.

Day 5: Return journey

Head back down the valley road to wherever you started from. Build in extra time here rather than on the earlier days: the road beyond Dir is slow, and rain can turn a normal drive into a much longer one. Check our Kumrat road condition guide before you set off.

What this itinerary assumes

  • Two nights camping at altitude, either in your own tent or a hired one at a seasonal camp near Jahaz Banda.
  • Jeep transfers on both the Thal–Taki Top leg and, if you take it, the run out to Kala Chashma. Arrange these in Thal a day ahead if you can.
  • One genuinely hard day, day 3, with several hours of climbing above 3,000 metres. If anyone in the group is not used to that, drop Katora Lake and treat this as a shorter Jahaz Banda itinerary instead.
  • A spare day somewhere. If your schedule allows six days rather than five, keep the extra one loose rather than adding it to the plan, so a closed road or a bad-weather day at altitude does not force you to cancel the trek.

Who this itinerary suits

Groups who have camped before, are comfortable with a full day of trekking, and are not trying to also fit in Badgoi Pass or a side trip to Swat in the same five days. If your group includes young children, older parents or anyone unused to altitude, our Kumrat Valley with family guide sets out a gentler plan built around the forest and the short walks instead.

Is it safe to travel to Upper Dir?

The UK government's Pakistan travel advice, updated 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Upper Dir. Pakistani travellers still trek to Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake through the summer season, but check current local news and police advice before you go, and if you hold a foreign passport, check your own government's advice, since it can affect travel insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days enough for Kumrat, Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake?

Yes, for a fit group, with one day to travel in, two trekking days including the climb to Katora Lake, a day to come back down and a travel day out. Add a sixth day as a weather margin if you can.

Do I need camping gear for this itinerary?

You need warm layers and a sleeping bag rated for cold nights at altitude. Tents can be hired at the seasonal camps near Jahaz Banda; bringing your own gives you more flexibility on where you sleep.

Can I do this itinerary without camping?

Not really. There are simple huts at Jahaz Banda in season, but nothing beyond it, so the two nights at altitude mean either a hut or a tent rather than a hotel bed.

What happens if it rains on the trek days?

Postpone the climb to Katora Lake rather than push on in poor visibility. Build the spare day mentioned above into your schedule so a lost day does not cancel the whole trip.

Do I need a guide for this route?

Not compulsory, but recommended for the Jahaz Banda to Katora Lake leg, where the path is not always clear and the weather changes quickly. Guides can be hired in Thal.
