The best sunset points in Islamabad are Daman-e-Koh, the Pir Sohawa ridge, Shakarparian and the shore of Rawal Lake. Daman-e-Koh is the easiest and most popular: a viewpoint about 2,400 feet above sea level on the Margalla Hills, with the city, Faisal Mosque and Rawal Lake laid out below. Get there 45 minutes before sunset to find parking and a place on the wall.
Sunset comes as early as about 5 pm in December and after 7 pm in June and July, so the time you leave depends on the month. This guide covers each spot, when to go, and the few rules that matter in a national park with leopards.

When does the sun set in Islamabad?
Typical sunset times through 2026, taken from published sun tables and rounded, are:

Times shift by a few minutes within each month, and the hills can cut off the light a little earlier than the table suggests. Look up the exact time for your day, and plan to be in place at least 30 to 45 minutes early.
Daman-e-Koh: the classic viewpoint
Daman-e-Koh sits on the road up to Pir Sohawa, about 500 feet above the city. From the southern side you can pick out Faisal Mosque, Seventh Avenue and Rawal Lake, and telescopes and a map of the city are set up on the platform. Entry appeared to be free in 2026, and listings give opening hours of roughly 9 am to 11 pm, but confirm on the day.
The road up is narrow and congested at weekends and on holidays, so leave early. Monkeys are common and take snacks from people, so keep food in the car or bag. You can also reach it on foot via Trail 2. See our Daman-e-Koh guide for the road, the walk and what is there.
Pir Sohawa: a wider ridge
Pir Sohawa is higher up the same road, on the ridge of the Margalla Hills. It used to be known for the big restaurants built there. Monal, La Montana and Gloria Jeans were ordered closed by the Supreme Court in 2024 and demolished, and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board is restoring the hilltop as an open viewpoint, with benches and small local food kiosks planned. Don't plan a dinner-with-a-view here. Do plan a sunset with a wide view and fewer crowds than before.

Shakarparian: city, monument and dusk lights
Shakarparian is a hill park near Zero Point, and the Pakistan Monument stands on it. Late afternoon is a good time to visit: you can watch the light on the city and see the lights begin to come on. Rawal Lake and Lake View Park
Rawal Lake is the calmest option. The still water reflects the sky, and it is a good place to watch the light fade with family and food. Lake View Park, on the shore, listed entry at Rs20 per person in 2026 and opens daily from 10 am to 10 pm, so you can stay after dark, unlike in the hills. Faisal Mosque at dusk
Faisal Mosque is a sunset stop for the light on the white marble and the illuminated minarets after dark, not for a horizon view. Arrive before the evening prayer, dress modestly, and check the current visiting times. See our Faisal Mosque guide.
Safety in the Margalla Hills
The Margalla Hills are a national park with leopards. Sightings are rare, but there have been alerts and warnings.
- Be out of the hills before dark. The advice is to leave about half an hour before sunset. Leopards are active at night, and the trails are not for use after dark.
- Drive up, don't hike, for sunset. If you do walk, go in a group and keep to marked trails.
- Don't feed monkeys or other animals.
- Take rubbish away with you.
If your plan is to see the sunset from the hills and be home before dark, Daman-e-Koh by car works if you leave soon after the sun goes down. For a longer evening, choose the lake or the city.
