Peshawar to Malam Jabba is about 200 to 215 km by road, and a route guide puts the drive at five to six hours. You join the M-1 motorway, take the Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara, drive on to Mingora and then climb the hill road to Malam Jabba. The last 42 km up from Mingora is the slowest part of the day.

The route via Chakdara
- Peshawar to Chakdara. Use the M-1 to the Karnal Sher Khan interchange, then the Swat Motorway to Chakdara. Chakdara is about 130 km from Peshawar by the older road. The motorway avoids the Malakand Pass road and saves about an hour.
- Chakdara to Mingora. About 40 km on the N-45, through busy towns. This is where you meet the traffic.
- Mingora to Malam Jabba. About 42 km via Manglor. The road climbs into the hills and the last stretch is winding.

Time and road notes
The figures above come from one route guide and one route planner, and neither is precise for a family car with stops. Plan for the first two sections to take around three hours and the climb to take two or more, which is why we say five to six hours in total.
Traffic through Mingora and the bazaars on the Malam Jabba road is the main delay, and it worsens at weekends and in the summer season. The hill road narrows near the top, and in winter it can be affected by snow. Our Malam Jabba in winter guide covers that.
What you are driving to
Malam Jabba is a hill resort in the Hindu Kush, with its peak at 2,804 metres, roughly 40 km from Saidu Sharif. It is one of only two ski resorts in Pakistan, and a new 800-metre chairlift was inaugurated there in September 2016. It is owned by the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation.
The resort was destroyed by militants in 2008 and rebuilt afterwards, and a five-star hotel opened in 2020. That history is part of why security advice matters on this road. At that height it is cooler than Peshawar, so bring a warm layer for the evening.
Is it safe?
Read this section before planning. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Peshawar and to Swat, and against all but essential travel to Nowshera, Mardan and Malakand, which lie on this route. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat, killing 17.
Pakistani families still travel this way, but the picture has worsened in 2026 and it is worth being cautious. Check local news and current police advice the day before you leave, keep to daylight hours and follow any checkpoint instructions. A practical tip
Leave Peshawar by 7 or 8 am so that you reach Mingora by late morning, with the climb still ahead of you in good light. Check the hill road with your hotel before you leave Mingora, and carry cash for the hill section.
The older road through Malakand
Before the Swat Motorway, the standard route went over the Malakand Pass on the older road towards Chakdara. That road still exists and passes through busy towns. A guide quoted above says the motorway saves about an hour and avoids the jams near Malakand, so for a visitor it is the better choice.
Should you go from Peshawar, or from Islamabad?
Peshawar is the shorter start for Malam Jabba, and the motorway makes the first part quick. If you are flying into Islamabad and have no reason to go to Peshawar, starting from there is simpler. See Peshawar to Swat for the wider route.
