The road is the N-45, which runs from Nowshera to Chitral, and the towns come in a fixed order: Malakand and Chakdara at about 130 km, Timergara about 38 km beyond, and Dir town about 60 to 70 km after that.

Is it safe?
Check this before you plan anything else. The UK government's Pakistan travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Peshawar, Upper Dir and Lower Dir, and against all but essential travel to Malakand and other districts along the way. The N-45 from Mardan to Chitral is also on the UK's list.
Recent events match that advice. Dawn reported a gun battle between police and militants in the Barikot Dubando area of Dir that was in its second day on 13 August 2026, with helicopter strikes on suspected hideouts. Reports in June 2026 described a constable shot dead in Lower Dir and six militants killed in Talash. On 16 July, three police were killed at Laram Top in Lower Dir.
Pakistani visitors do still travel through Dir, and many of the valleys beyond it are visited in summer. If you are going, check local news and current police advice on the day, keep to daylight and take the advice of people on the ground. Overseas visitors should read their own government's advice first, because ignoring it can void travel insurance.
What is the route from Peshawar to Dir?
- Peshawar to Malakand and Chakdara, about 130 km. The road runs north-east through Nowshera and Mardan districts and climbs through the Malakand hills to Chakdara, at the entrance to Lower Dir. Published times for this leg are about an hour and a half to two hours.
- Chakdara to Timergara, about 38 km. The main town of Lower Dir. Allow about an hour, because this stretch is busy.
- Timergara to Dir town, about 60 to 70 km. The road climbs into Upper Dir along the river. This is the slowest leg, and about an hour and a half is a fair allowance.

How long does it really take?
Sites that time this drive on an empty road quote two hours for Peshawar to Timergara. Adding the last leg to Dir town, and the stops and checkposts that almost every traveller meets, gives five to six hours. Add more in rain, on Eid or if the Chakdara to Timergara stretch is congested.
Dir town is not a place to arrive at after dark. If you are starting from Peshawar, leave early enough to be there by afternoon.
What is the road like?
The N-45 is paved throughout and is two lanes wide for most of its length. Residents of Lower Dir petitioned the Peshawar High Court in May 2026 for the repair and widening of the Chakdara to Timergara road, describing its condition as dangerous, so expect potholes and slow trucks there.
After Timergara the road follows the river valley and climbs. Landslides after rain are a risk in the monsoon. Fuel and cash are best sorted in Peshawar, Chakdara or Timergara, before the mountain sections.
Should you go?
For most families we would say wait, or choose another destination. If you have a real reason to be in Dir, such as family, work or a trip to Kumrat, go by daylight, keep your plans flexible, and check the situation again the evening before.
