Islamabad to Dir is about 285 to 305 km by road, and six to seven hours is a realistic drive once you allow for stops. The route runs up the M-1 and Swat Motorway to Chakdara, then north on the N-45 through Timergara to Dir. Dir is also the last big town before the Lowari tunnel, which leads to Chitral. This is a road with a serious security advisory, so read the safety section first.

The route
- Islamabad to the Swat Motorway. Take the M-1 towards Peshawar and leave at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange.
- Swat Motorway (M-16) to Chakdara. The motorway ends at the Chakdara bridge on the N-45, a junction town in Lower Dir.
- Chakdara to Timergara. About 38 to 40 km on the N-45. Timergara is the Lower Dir district headquarters.
- Timergara to Upper Dir. About 60 km, in the hills, for around an hour.
A route planner gives 3 hours 45 minutes, which is too optimistic. A local guide says almost six hours, and we would plan for six to seven with meals and prayer stops.
Beyond Dir: the Lowari tunnel
Dir is the last stop before the Lowari tunnel, which carries the N-45 under the Lowari Pass to Chitral. It has two tubes of 8.5 km and 1.9 km, 10.4 km in all, and has been in service since July 2017. It replaced the pass, which used to be snowed in for months. Dir to Chitral takes about three hours.
The tunnel was reopened to all types of traffic on 2 August 2026, after a period of restriction. The authorities said that operating hours and procedures would be settled between the district administration and the NHA, so check locally before you rely on a particular timing. Dir as a base
Upper Dir is the district that holds Dir town, Kumrat Valley, Sheringal and the Lowari Top. It borders Chitral to the north, Afghanistan to the north-west and Swat to the east, and shares a border of about 40 to 50 km with Afghanistan. That last point matters: the UK advises against all travel within 10 miles of the Afghan border, so parts of the district are further off limits than the main road.

Is the road to Dir safe?
Check this carefully. The UK government's travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir, and against all travel on the N45 from Mardan to Chitral city. It advises against all but essential travel to Malakand and Mardan, which the route also passes. On 16 July 2026 three police officers were killed at Laram Top in Lower Dir, and on 2 August a suicide bomber killed 17 at Kabal in Swat.
Pakistani visitors still travel to Dir and beyond. Check local news and current police advice the day before, avoid driving after dark and follow instructions at checkposts. Foreign-passport holders should read their own government's advice, which may say not to go and can void travel insurance.
A practical tip
Leave Islamabad by 6 or 7 am, so that you reach Timergara in the middle of the day and Dir well before dusk. Fill up at Chakdara or Timergara, and carry cash.
Is Dir worth the drive?
Dir town itself is mainly a stopping point. Most people go on to Kumrat, Chitral or the Lowari tunnel, and treat Dir as a night on the way. If you have no need to go further than Dir, a trip to Swat is a shorter drive and better set up for visitors. If Kumrat or Chitral is your goal, Dir is the natural base, and going in daylight with a driver who knows the road makes a real difference.
