Paragliding in Hunza means a tandem flight: you sit in a harness in front of a qualified pilot who does all the flying. Most flights launch from the ridge above Duikar, near the Eagle's Nest viewpoint high over Karimabad, and land on open ground on the valley floor. Where do flights take off and land?
The main launch is on the high ground above Duikar, the village on the mountainside above Altit. It is the same ridge people drive up to for sunrise at Eagle's Nest, at about 2,850 metres, and depending on the wind the pilot may use a spot a short walk further up. From there you fly out over the valley and come down on open ground near the Hunza river. One operator uses the helipad at Ahmedabad as its landing field; others pick a field or gravel flat according to the wind. The operator drives you back up or on to your hotel afterwards.
Some operators also fly from other launches, including near Attabad for a flight over the lake. These depend on the day's conditions, so ask about them rather than booking around them.
How the day works
A typical tandem flight runs like this:
- Book and agree the details: the price, what is included, the pickup time and what happens if the weather is wrong.
- Pickup from your hotel in Karimabad, Aliabad or Altit, and the drive up to Duikar.
- The briefing. The pilot fits your harness and helmet and explains the take-off, usually a few running steps down the slope when told.
- Waiting for the wind. This is normal. The pilot may wait half an hour or more for the right breeze, and may decide not to fly at all.
- The flight and landing. Once airborne you sit back in the harness; for the landing you follow the pilot's instructions.
- Back to your hotel, with the video of your flight.
Allow two to three hours for the whole outing, most of it spent getting up the hill and waiting for the air.
What will you see?
On a clear day you see what people come to Eagle's Nest for: Rakaposhi and Diran across the valley, Ultar Sar and Ladyfinger behind Karimabad, Baltit and Altit forts below, and the Hunza river winding through terraces and poplars, all at once.
How long you stay up depends on the air, not the price. In calm conditions you glide down in 15 minutes or so. When the slopes are warm and the air is rising, a pilot can stay up for 30 minutes or longer; one operator says up to 45, but no pilot can promise it.
When can you fly?
Operators in Hunza list the season as roughly March to November. Within that:
- Spring (April and May): blossom below and snow on the peaks, but less settled weather.
- Summer (June to August): long days and strong rising air, which suits longer flights but can make the middle of the day too rough for passengers. Karimabad is busiest now, so book early.

The air is generally smoother in the morning and late afternoon, and pilots choose their time accordingly. Wind, cloud on the ridge or rain will ground flights, and a good operator will cancel rather than fly in poor conditions. Book your flight early in your stay, so there is another morning to try again.
How much does paragliding in Hunza cost?
Prices quoted by Hunza operators for 2026 run from about PKR 25,000 to PKR 35,000 per person for a tandem flight, and one operator lists about USD 150 for foreign nationals. Cheaper figures online are often old. Treat any figure, including these, as a guide and confirm the price when you book.
The price usually covers:
- The tandem flight with a pilot
- Helmet, harness and a pre-flight briefing
- Video of your flight, on a GoPro or 360 camera
- Transport to the launch and back, though confirm this, as it is not always included
Some operators ask you to book several days ahead and pay a deposit. Ask how the deposit is handled if the weather cancels the flight; the fair answer is a refund or a new date.
How to check an operator
Pakistan does not yet have a fully established licensing system for tandem pilots. The national paragliding body says it is working with the Civil Aviation Authority on a formal framework, and pilots in Hunza hold a mix of local and international ratings. That puts the checking on you. Before booking, ask:
- Which tandem rating does the pilot hold, and who issued it? A tandem rating is a separate qualification from a solo licence. A serious pilot will tell you straight away.
- How many tandem flights has the pilot done, and how long have they flown in Hunza?
- Does the tandem harness have a reserve parachute? It should.
- What is the weight limit? One operator's limits are 30 to 120 kg, with a minimum age of 10 and parental consent under 18. Be honest about your weight.
- What happens if the weather is wrong? An operator who is happy to cancel is one who takes safety seriously.
Look at the kit when you arrive: the wing, lines and harnesses should look cared for, not faded and frayed. Recent reviews from other passengers help, and so does asking your hotel which pilots are established locally. Never push a pilot to fly when they are unsure.
Is it safe, and who should not fly?
A tandem flight with an experienced pilot, sound equipment and the right weather is low-risk, but not risk-free. These are big mountains with strong, changeable air: in July 2022 a visiting French pilot flying solo went missing after taking off above central Hunza, and the first searches found no trace. He was no tandem passenger, but it shows why the pilot's judgement matters more than anything else.
Think carefully, or ask a doctor first, if you:
- Have back, neck, knee or heart problems, or have had recent surgery
- Are pregnant
- Are outside the operator's weight or age limits

Motion sickness is common on longer flights with turns. Say so before take-off, and the pilot will fly gently.
What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes with grip, not sandals or chappals, because you run on the take-off
- Long trousers and a windproof jacket, as it is cooler in the air, even in summer
- Gloves outside high summer, and sunglasses that sit firmly
- Nothing loose: leave hats, scarves and bags with the ground crew, and keep your phone zipped away unless the pilot agrees otherwise
- Cash for the balance, in case a bank transfer is not possible
Is paragliding in Hunza worth it?
For most fit adults who can afford it, yes. It is the one way to see the whole of central Hunza, from the forts to the high peaks, in a single view, and the setting is among the most dramatic anywhere in Pakistan. Couples and groups of friends who want one memorable splurge on a Hunza trip will get the most from it.
It is less worth it if your budget is tight or the day is cloudy. Sunrise at Eagle's Nest costs only a jeep ride and shows most of the same mountains. If you are nervous, book with an operator who will talk you through it, and remember you can always say no at the launch.
