Neelum Valley 4-Day Itinerary with Ratti Gali Lake

A four-day Neelum Valley itinerary gives you enough time to fit in Ratti Gali Lake without rushing it: a night in Keran or Dowarian, a full day for the jeep track and the lake, and a spare day either side for the drive and the road. If the high lake is not the priority, the same four days work just as well spent going further up the valley instead, with nights in Sharda and Kel and a push to Arang Kel.

This itinerary sets out the Ratti Gali plan day by day, then a Sharda–Kel alternative, and explains which one suits your group.

Which four days should you plan?

Neelum Valley is one long road, and four days is not enough to do everything on it. The choice is between the high lake and the upper valley:

• Ratti Gali Lake. The better choice if the lake itself is the reason for the trip, if you are travelling between July and early October, and if your group is fit enough for a long jeep ride and a walk at altitude.
• Sharda and Kel, with Arang Kel. The better choice outside the Ratti Gali season, for families who would rather not spend a whole day above 3,000 metres, and for anyone who wants to see more of the valley itself rather than one lake.

Plan A: four days built around Ratti Gali Lake

Day 1: Islamabad to Keran

Leave Islamabad by six in the morning. The route runs through Murree, down to Kohala on the Jhelum, then up the Neelum valley through Muzaffarabad and Athmuqam to Keran, roughly 225 km and about seven hours with stops. Fill the tank and draw cash in Muzaffarabad, since fuel and functioning cash machines both thin out further up the valley. Settle into Keran in the afternoon and walk down to the river, where the Neelum itself is the Line of Control.

Day 2: Ratti Gali Lake

This is the long day. Leave Keran by six or six thirty in the morning for the short run to Dowarian, about 15 km on, where the jeep track to Ratti Gali begins. Hire a jeep there for the return trip, agreeing the fare and the waiting time before you set off; the track is 16 km of single-lane, unpaved road that private cars cannot use.

1. 6:30–9:30. Dowarian to the base camp by jeep, climbing through forest and then open grassland.
2. 9:30–11:00. Walk to the lake, 45 minutes to an hour and a half on foot, or by horse if anyone would rather ride.
3. An hour or two at the lake, watching the weather, which tends to turn in the afternoon.
4. Back at the base camp by early afternoon, then the jeep back down to Dowarian.
5. Return to Keran in the evening for the second night.

Day 3: a spare day, or a short push up the valley

Keep this day flexible. If the lake was rained off on day two, this is your second chance. If day two went well, spend the morning around Keran and Upper Neelum, then drive up to Sharda in the afternoon for a look at Sharda Peeth, the riverside ruins above the bazaar, before returning to Keran or staying the night in Sharda if you would rather split the drive home.

Day 4: back to Islamabad

Leave by seven in the morning for the long drive south. From Keran it is roughly seven to nine hours to Islamabad with stops; add half an hour if you are starting from Dowarian or Sharda. Aim to be through Murree before the Sunday afternoon traffic builds.

Plan B: four days to Sharda, Kel and Arang Kel

If Ratti Gali is out of season, or your group would rather not spend a full day on a jeep track and a mountain walk, spend the same four days going further up the valley instead.

1. Day 1: Islamabad to Keran, as above.
2. Day 2: Keran to Sharda, about two hours on a rougher road, with the afternoon free for Sharda Peeth and the bazaar.
3. Day 3: Sharda to Kel and Arang Kel. A local jeep for the rough 20 km to Kel, then the chairlift and a walk up to the meadow village of Arang Kel. Stay the night up there if everyone can manage the climb with an overnight bag, or return to Sharda for the night.
4. Day 4: back to Islamabad. A long day, around nine to ten hours from Sharda.

A night at Arang Kel is, for many visitors, the best single experience in the valley, and four days is the minimum that fits it in comfortably rather than as a rushed afternoon.

Which plan suits your group?

• Fit groups of friends, June to September: Plan A, for the lake.
• Families with small children or older relatives: Plan B, which keeps everyone lower and avoids the long day at altitude.
• Couples wanting the classic Neelum views: either plan works; Plan B gives you a night at Arang Kel, which most people rate above the lake itself.
• Anyone visiting outside July to early October: Plan B by default, since Ratti Gali's jeep track is normally closed by snow the rest of the year.

Is four days enough?

For one of the two plans above, yes. It is not enough for both: Ratti Gali and Arang Kel together need five days at least, because each one is close to a full day on its own once you add the drive to reach it. Decide before you leave which one matters more to your group, and build the itinerary around that rather than trying to fit in everything.
