The best time to visit Ratti Gali Lake is from late July to the end of August, when the ice has gone, the meadows around the shore are in flower and the jeep track from Dowarian is reliably open. Early September is the best choice if you want fewer people and more settled weather. The track usually opens between late June and early July and closes with the first heavy snow, typically in October, so outside roughly July to September the lake is not a realistic trip.

When does the Ratti Gali jeep track open?
The 16 km track from Dowarian to the base camp lies under snow for roughly half the year. It opens only once the snow has melted enough and the Azad Kashmir highways department, sometimes helped by local people, has cleared the slides and repaired the washouts from the winter.
That date moves from year to year. In a normal year jeeps are running by late June or early July. After a heavy winter, or when repairs are slow, it can be later: at the end of May 2024 the track was still blocked in several places and repair work had not started. Before you commit to dates in June or the first week of July, ask a hotel in Keran or Dowarian whether jeeps are actually reaching the base camp.
Month by month
November to May: closed
Snow covers the track, the base camp and the lake. There are no camps and no jeeps. Neelum itself is well worth visiting in May, but not for Ratti Gali.
June: mostly still closed
For much of June the track is not yet open. If it opens late in the month, you will find the lake largely frozen, with snow lying down to the shore and across parts of the path from the base camp. It is striking, but the walk is slippery and cold, and not the lake you see in photographs.
Early to mid July: ice and snow
In most years the jeeps are running by now. The ice on the lake breaks up in stages, and in early July you may see floating slabs of it, with deep snow on the slopes above and patches across the path. The first flowers appear in the grass as the snow retreats. Nights at the base camp are cold.
This is the time for people who want snow and ice around the water. Wear shoes with real grip, and expect the walk to take longer.
Late July and August: the classic season
This is the Ratti Gali in most photographs: open blue-green water, snow only in the gullies and on the peaks, and grassy slopes full of wildflowers. Days at the lake are in the low to mid teens and nights around 5°C.
It is also monsoon season and the busiest time of year. Two things follow from that:
- Flash-flood risk. In August 2022 a cloudburst in the Ratti Gali nullah killed five tourists a few kilometres below the lake. On 14 August 2025 floods washed away more than 2 km of the track, stranding around 700 to 800 people at the base camp until it was repaired. Don't go up after heavy overnight rain, or when a rain alert is out.
- Crowds. The 14 August holiday and summer weekends bring the largest numbers of the year. Go on a weekday if you can, and start early.
September: quieter and clearer
The monsoon fades and the air is often clearer than at any other time of the season. There are far fewer people, and the lake is at its most peaceful. The trade-offs are colder mornings, flowers that have mostly gone over, and grass turning gold. Nights at the base camp drop close to freezing, and services there can be thinner late in the season, so ask in Dowarian what is still operating.
For many people who have already been once, September is the better month.
October: closing
Early October can still be clear and beautiful, but the first heavy snowfall on the high ground usually arrives during the month and ends the season for the jeep track. Plan an October visit only if you can go at short notice and are ready to turn back.
Snow on the lake by month
- June: largely frozen, with snow to the shoreline.
- Early July: ice breaking up, floating slabs, heavy snow on the surrounding slopes.
- Mid to late July: open water in most years, with snow still in the gullies.
- August: open water; snow only high up and in shaded corners.
- September: open water; fresh snow possible on the peaks late in the month.
- October onwards: new snow on the ground, then the lake freezes again.
Every winter is different, and a heavy snow year can push each of these stages later.
When are the flowers at their best?
The flowers follow the snow. They start on the lower meadows around the base camp as soon as the ground clears in July, reach the slopes around the lake a little later, and are at their fullest from mid-July to mid-August. By September most have finished.
If flowers are the reason you are going, aim for the last ten days of July or the first ten of August, and accept the monsoon risk that comes with them.
When are the crowds worst?
The 14 August holiday is one of the busiest days of the season, along with summer weekends and the school holidays from June to August. On those days the base camp fills up and the shoreline is busy by late morning.
The Eid holidays, which once filled the valley in summer, now fall before the lake opens: in 2027 both Eids come before June. That makes a mid-week visit in late July or early September the quietest combination of good conditions and small crowds.
What time of day to be there
Ratti Gali is a morning place. Clouds tend to build after midday, and storms are most likely in the afternoon, especially in July and August.
- Leave Dowarian by 6:30 am, so you are at the base camp by about 9.
- Be at the lake by mid-morning. The water is often calmest and the light clearest then.
- Start back down by midday or soon after, and be at the base camp by early afternoon.
- Leave the base camp by 2 pm so the jeep reaches Dowarian in daylight.

If the lake isn't open when you arrive
It happens every year to people who come in June or right after a flood. The rest of the valley does not depend on the jeep track, so a closed lake need not waste the trip:
- Arang Kel, above Kel, is lower at about 2,550 metres and is usually walkable from May. See our guide to the best time to visit Arang Kel.

- Sharda, with its riverside ruins, is an easy half day from Dowarian.
So when should you go?
- For the classic open lake and flowers: the last week of July or the first half of August, mid-week, with a spare day in case of rain.
- For snow and ice around the water: early to mid July, once jeeps are confirmed as running.
- For quiet and clear air: the first half of September.
- Avoid: June unless the track is confirmed open, 14 August, and any day after heavy rain.
