Islamabad to Ratti Gali Lake: Route and Timings

Getting from Islamabad to Ratti Gali Lake takes two days each way in practice. Day one is the drive of about 245 km to Keran or Dowarian in the Neelum Valley, seven and a half to nine hours with stops. Day two is the lake: a jeep from Dowarian to the base camp, two to three hours up a 16 km track, then 45 minutes to an hour and a half on foot. Most people need three days for the round trip and are better off with four.

This guide breaks the journey into its legs, compares the places to spend the nights, and gives a realistic timetable for the lake day, plus plans for three, four and five days.

Day one: Islamabad to Keran or Dowarian

Islamabad to Muzaffarabad

The usual route is the Murree Expressway, then down to the Jhelum at Kohala, where you cross into Azad Kashmir, and on to Muzaffarabad. It is about 140 km and takes three and a half to four hours, longer on summer weekends when traffic backs up around Murree.

The alternative is the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then across via Garhi Habibullah to Muzaffarabad. At about 190 km it is longer, but much of it is motorway, and it is a useful way round when the Murree road is jammed.

Leave Islamabad by 6 in the morning. An early start is the single thing that most improves this day.

Muzaffarabad to Keran and Dowarian

From Muzaffarabad the Neelum Valley road follows the river upstream past Nauseri, Kundal Shahi and Athmuqam to Keran, about 90 km and roughly three hours. The road is paved and in fair repair, but narrow and slow. Dowarian is about 15 km further, half an hour or so beyond Keran. Our Neelum Valley road condition guide goes through each stretch.

Fill up with fuel and draw cash in Muzaffarabad or Athmuqam. You will need cash for the jeep, and there is nowhere to get it at Dowarian or the base camp.

Leaving Islamabad at 6, you can expect to reach Keran in the mid-afternoon and Dowarian a little after, with time for lunch in Muzaffarabad.

Where to spend the nights

You have four realistic choices for the night before the lake, and one for the night after.

• Keran. The most choice of hotels in the lower valley, mostly riverside resorts. The cost is an extra half hour or so in the morning.
• Dowarian. The shortest start for the jeep. There is an AJK Tourism lodge, a forest rest house and a few guesthouses, but far less choice than Keran.
• Sharda. About 30 km past Dowarian. Only worth it if you are continuing up the valley afterwards, since it adds driving back down in the morning.
• The base camp. Some people go straight up on the afternoon of day one and sleep in a tent camp, to see the lake at first light. It means going from Islamabad to well over 3,000 metres in a single day, and the nights are close to freezing, so it is not for children or anyone new to altitude.

Day two: the lake

The jeep track is 16 km of single-lane, unpaved road, climbing through forest and then open grassland, with hairpins and stream crossings. Private cars cannot use it. You hire the whole jeep in Dowarian; arrange it the evening before through your hotel or in Dowarian, and agree the fare, the waiting time at the top and the return time before you set off.

A realistic timetable for the day:

1. 6:30 am: leave Dowarian (or 6 am from Keran). The earliest jeeps get the calmest weather.
2. 9 to 9:30 am: reach the base camp. Tea, a toilet stop, and a few minutes to catch your breath at altitude.
3. Around 10 to 10:30 am: reach the lake, after a walk of 45 minutes to an hour and a half. Horses are available if anyone would rather ride.
4. An hour or two at the lake. Walk along the shore, eat something, and keep an eye on the clouds.
5. By 1 to 1:30 pm: back at the base camp. Weather here tends to turn in the afternoon, and the track is worse in rain.
6. By 4 to 5 pm: back in Dowarian. In time to reach Keran or Sharda in daylight.

The jeep ride is long and rough. Anyone prone to car sickness should sit in front and take something for it before leaving.

For the lake day, carry:

• A warm jacket, hat and gloves, even in August
• A rain layer and shoes that can cope with mud, snow patches and wet grass
• Water, snacks and sunscreen
• Enough cash for the jeep, tea at the base camp and a horse if anyone needs one
• Your CNIC, and any regular medication

Should you do it as a day trip or stay at the base camp?

As a day trip from Dowarian or Keran, the lake is very manageable if you start early. You sleep lower, which is kinder to children and older relatives, and you have the evening in a hotel with hot water.

Staying at the base camp gives you the lake at first light, before the jeeps arrive, and the night sky at 3,000-plus metres. The cost is a cold night in a basic tent with no signal, and the risk of being stuck if heavy rain damages the track, as happened to hundreds of tourists in August 2025.

For most families the day trip is the better choice. For fit groups of friends in settled weather, a night at the base camp is what makes the trip.

Getting back to Islamabad

The return drive is a long day. From Keran it is roughly seven to nine hours to Islamabad with stops; from Dowarian add half an hour. Leave by 8 in the morning to be in Islamabad by late afternoon, and avoid arriving at Murree around dusk on a Sunday, when the traffic is heaviest.

Plans for three, four and five days

Three days: the minimum

1. Islamabad to Keran or Dowarian.
2. Ratti Gali Lake and back; night in Dowarian or Keran.
3. Keran to Islamabad.

This works, but one closure or one rainy morning cancels the lake. It suits people who can easily come back another time.

Four days: our recommendation

1. Islamabad to Keran.
2. Ratti Gali Lake; night in Keran.
3. A spare day: use it for the lake if day two was wet, or visit Upper Neelum or drive on to Sharda.
4. Back to Islamabad.

Five days: Ratti Gali and the upper valley

1. Islamabad to Keran.
2. Ratti Gali Lake; night in Keran or Dowarian.
3. Up the valley to Sharda and Kel.
4. Arang Kel in the morning; afternoon back down to Keran or Muzaffarabad.
5. Back to Islamabad.

By public transport

Buses run daily from Muzaffarabad to Kel along the valley road, and they pass through Dowarian, so you can get there without a car. In Dowarian you hire a jeep for the track like everyone else. It is slower and less flexible, and on the way back you are dependent on space on a bus coming down the valley, but it is a workable option for students and solo travellers.
