When is the Lok Mela held?
Recent editions have all been in November. The 2024 mela opened on 8 November, and the 2025 one on 7 November, each running ten days. The festival has run since 1981 according to ProPakistani, so it is a long-established event and not a one-off.
Dates are announced by Lok Virsa and reported in Dawn, Radio Pakistan and other outlets, normally in October. If you are booking flights or a hotel, wait for that announcement rather than assuming the same days. What is at the Lok Mela?
The mela is laid out as a set of pavilions and open-air stalls around the Lok Virsa grounds. Based on what Lok Virsa announced for 2024 and 2025, expect:
- Provincial pavilions for Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, each showing its own crafts, dress and music.
- Artisans at work, so you can watch potters, weavers, woodcarvers and embroiderers, and buy from them directly.
- A craft bazaar with textiles, pottery, jewellery, leatherwork and similar goods.
- An international pavilion. In 2025 Lok Virsa said participants from 12 countries would take part, double the previous year.
- Folk music and dance on stage through the evenings, plus puppet shows and storytelling.
- Regional food stalls serving dishes from across the country.
The exact programme and stage line-up change each year and are published shortly before opening.
Tickets and timings
For 2025, event listings gave the daily hours as 10 am to 10 pm and the ticket price as PKR 200 for adults and PKR 100 for students. We found that on a single listings site rather than on an official page, so treat it as a guide. Prices change from year to year, and children's rules and student-card requirements vary, so bring cash and a student ID if you need it and check the current price with Lok Virsa.
Lok Virsa also runs an online ticketing site, which is worth checking before you go in case advance tickets are offered for the current edition.
How to get there
Lok Virsa is on Shakarparian Hill, off Garden Avenue near the Pakistan Monument, which makes it easy to combine with other sights nearby. Parking near a big event is limited and roads around the monument can be slow in the evening, so an app-based taxi is often the simpler choice. When to go for the best experience
Weekends and the final days draw the largest crowds, and the evenings, when the stage programmes run, are the busiest. If you mainly want to talk to artisans and shop without queues, go on a weekday around late morning or early afternoon. If you want music and the atmosphere, go after dark, dress warmly because November evenings in Islamabad are cool, and expect crowds at the food stalls.
A few practical points:
- Bring cash. Many stalls take only cash, and card or mobile payment may not work in the crowd.
- Allow three to four hours for a full walk through the pavilions and a meal.
- Keep children close in the evening crowds.
- Expect security checks at the gate; leave large bags in the car or at the hotel.
Is the Lok Mela worth it?
If you are in Islamabad in early to mid November, yes. It is one of the few places where you can see crafts and food from every province, and meet the makers, in one afternoon. It suits families, couples and anyone buying gifts or interested in folk culture.
