Kumrat Valley Trip Cost: Budget Breakdown for 2026

The cost of a Kumrat Valley trip comes down to three things: getting to Thal, the jeep from Thal into the forest, and where you sleep. In 2026 a jeep for a day in the valley costs roughly PKR 7,000 to 10,000, shared by everyone in it, and a basic room or hut roughly PKR 3,000 to 8,000 a night. Three-day group tours from Islamabad and Lahore are commonly advertised at around PKR 18,000 to 23,500 per person.

Prices here are rough 2026 asking rates gathered from several sources, not quotes. They change with the season, jump at Eid, and vary from one camp or driver to the next, so use them to plan and confirm on the spot.

What decides the cost of a Kumrat trip?

Four choices set the budget more than anything else:

• How you get to Thal. Your own car, a hired car with a driver, public transport or a group tour. For most groups this is the biggest single cost of the trip.
• How many people share the jeep. Jeeps are hired by the vehicle, so six people pay a third of what two people pay each.
• When you go. At Eid and on summer weekends, jeep fares and room rates rise and the cheapest rooms go first. A weekday in June or September is usually cheaper and always easier.
• Where you sleep. A tent by the river, a wooden hut, a room in Thal or a glamping dome are very different prices for the same valley.

Getting to Thal

Your own car

Islamabad to Thal is about 375 km each way. With the drive back and some local running, allow for roughly 800 km. A car that manages 12 km to the litre overall will use about 65 to 70 litres; multiply by the pump price on the day. The broken valley road above Dir is slow, low-gear driving, so expect worse fuel economy there than on the motorway.

Add motorway tolls on the M-1 and the Swat Motorway in both directions. Fill up in Timergara or Dir, where fuel is easy to find; beyond Dir it is limited.

A hired car with a driver

Hiring a car and driver from Islamabad is usually priced per day, and for a trip like Kumrat the fuel, tolls and the driver's food and room are often added on top. Ask for a single figure that includes everything, and check whether the vehicle is allowed on the valley road beyond Dir. The extra cost buys a driver who knows the road and a group that is not exhausted on the way home.

Public transport

The cheapest way for one or two people: a coach to Dir or Timergara and a local van on to Thal, then a jeep shared with other travellers if you can find them. Fares change often, so ask at the terminal. It takes longer and leaves you dependent on van times, which can mean an extra night.

A group tour

For solo travellers and pairs, a group departure is often the cheapest way to see Kumrat. Three-day group tours from Lahore and Islamabad are advertised at roughly PKR 18,000 to 23,500 per person in 2026. Many leave Lahore overnight and pick up in Islamabad in the early hours, and most include transport, the jeep, shared rooms or tents and some meals. Read the inclusions carefully: whether meals, the jeep to Kala Chashma and a room rather than a tent are included makes a real difference.

How much is the jeep from Thal?

Jeeps wait in Thal bazaar and are hired for the vehicle, not the seat. A day's run into the forest, with stops at Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma and back to Thal, costs roughly PKR 7,000 to 10,000 in 2026, more at Eid.

Before you set off, agree:

• Exactly where you are going, and whether Kala Chashma is included, not just the forest camps.
• How long the driver will wait at each stop.
• One way or return. If you are sleeping at a forest camp, you need a drop one day and a pickup the next. Ask for a two-day price rather than paying two separate fares.

Jahaz Banda is a different jeep run on a different road, with a walk at the end, and is priced separately and higher. A jeep shared by six people at PKR 9,000 comes to PKR 1,500 each, which is why groups of friends find Kumrat good value and couples find it less so.

Where you sleep, and what it costs

Kumrat has three broad kinds of place to stay:

• Tents at riverside camps. Usually the cheapest bed in the valley, especially if you bring your own sleeping bag. Ask whether mattresses and blankets are included.
• Wooden huts and simple rooms in the forest and in Thal, roughly PKR 3,000 to 8,000 a night in 2026. What the price buys varies a great deal, so ask about the bathroom, hot water and bedding before you agree.
• Glamping sites with domes, pods and cabins. They cost considerably more than a hut and should be booked ahead.

Sleeping in Thal saves a second jeep fare. The trade-off is that you wake up in a village rather than by the river. Nights are cold throughout the season, so a place that provides enough bedding is worth paying a little more for.

Food and the small costs

Most forest camps cook simple set meals for their guests. Ask the price of meals when you book, because it can add up over two days for a family. Thal bazaar has simple restaurants and shops.

Other things to budget for:

• Snacks and water bought in Timergara or Dir, where there is more choice.
• A tip for your jeep driver if he has waited patiently or helped with bags.
• Charging. Power in the forest is limited, so bring power banks rather than paying to charge at a camp.
• A spare night. Rain or a road closure can keep you an extra day, and you will pay for the room either way.

Everything is paid in cash. There are no ATMs beyond Dir, and card machines are rare, so withdraw enough in Timergara or Dir for the jeep, the room, meals and a spare night.

Two sample budgets

These are for a group of four driving from Islamabad for three days and two nights, using 2026 rates. Fuel, tolls and food depend too much on your car and your appetite to put a number on, so they are left as separate lines.

On the budget plan, the jeep and two nights' rooms come to roughly PKR 3,000 to 5,000 per person before fuel and food. On the comfort plan, the same items come to roughly PKR 6,500 to 9,000 each, before the car hire and meals.

How to spend less in Kumrat

1. Go midweek, and never at Eid, when both jeeps and rooms cost more for a worse experience.
2. Fill the jeep. Travel as a group of five or six, or share with another small group from your hotel.
3. Stay in Thal and take one return jeep into the forest, rather than paying for two trips to sleep by the river.
4. Bring your own sleeping bag if you are camping; it makes the cheapest tents comfortable.
5. Buy snacks and water in Dir, not in the forest.
6. Book rooms directly with a hotel or camp you have spoken to, and confirm the rate and what it includes before you arrive.

Is Kumrat good value?

For a group of four to six friends with their own car, yes. The rooms are cheap, the jeep is split several ways, and you get a forest and a river that feel a long way from anywhere. The main cost is the distance: two long days of driving and the fuel that goes with them.

It is less good value for a couple travelling alone, who pay for the whole jeep, and at Eid, when prices rise and the track is jammed. If you only have a long weekend, the time on the road is a cost too: 17 to 20 hours of driving for one full day in the valley.
