Kumrat Valley Itinerary for 3 Days from Islamabad

A Kumrat Valley itinerary of 3 days from Islamabad works like this: day one is the drive to Thal, day two is a jeep through the forest to Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma, and day three is the drive home. It is tight, with 17 to 20 hours on the road across the three days, but it works if you leave early each morning and treat the middle day as the whole point of the trip.

Below is the plan hour by hour, with the choices that matter: where to sleep each night, when to book the jeep, and what to cut if the weather turns.

Is three days enough for Kumrat?

Three days is the minimum, not the ideal. You get one full day in the valley, which is enough for the forest, the waterfall and Kala Chashma, but not for Jahaz Banda, Katora Lake or the meadows at Dojanga. It suits groups of friends and couples used to long drives. For families with young children, four days with the drive split in two is far more comfortable.

It also leaves no slack. If rain closes the road or a jeep breaks down, you lose half the trip. If your dates allow, keep a fourth day free and use it only if you need it. Day 1: Islamabad to Thal

The day is almost all driving, so the start time decides everything. Our Islamabad to Kumrat route guide covers the road stage by stage; the short version:

1. 5 am: leave Islamabad on the M-1, then the Swat Motorway.
2. About 8 am: Chakdara, where the motorway ends.
3. About 9 am: breakfast, fuel and cash in Timergara. This is your last easy stop for all three.
4. About 11 am: turn off the N-45 just before Dir onto the valley road.
5. 2 to 3 pm: reach Thal.

In Thal, check in, then spend the rest of the afternoon on three jobs:

• Book tomorrow's jeep. Agree the route (forest, waterfall, Kala Chashma), the start time, how long the driver will wait, and the fare. Doing this the evening before means you are not haggling at 8 am with everyone else.
• Ask how the crossing at Thal is working. The crossing from the bazaar to the Kumrat road has been damaged repeatedly in recent years, by floods in 2024 and 2025 and a bridge collapse in November 2025, and your driver will know the current arrangement.
• See the wooden mosque. Thal's old Jamia Masjid, built of deodar, stands close to the bazaar. Go outside prayer times and ask before going in.

Eat early and sleep early. Nights in Thal are cool even in July.

Why sleep in Thal on night one? You arrive tired after nine hours or so on the road. A room in the village is easier to find, the jeep stand is on the doorstep, and you save a jeep fare on a night when you would barely see the forest anyway.

Day 2: the forest, Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma

This is the day you came for. Pack everything you need for the day in one bag: warm layer, rain jacket, water, lunch or snacks, and cash.

1. 7:30 to 8 am: leave Thal by jeep. The track follows the Panjkora north into the deodar and pine forest, over side streams and rocky sections.
2. About 9 am: the main camping area, roughly 13 km from Thal. Stop here long enough to walk along the river channels and see where you might sleep tonight.
3. Kumrat waterfall: close to the camping area and a short walk up from the track. Go in the morning, before the crowds arrive. Allow an hour.
4. Late morning: continue about 5 km up the track to Kala Chashma, the black spring, where most jeeps turn round. Allow two hours here: time for a long picnic by the water and a walk upstream along the valley.
5. About 2 pm: start back down.
6. Afternoon: either get dropped at a forest camp for the night, or return to Thal by about 4 pm.

If you are sleeping in the forest, you have the late afternoon and evening by the river, which is the main reason to sleep up there. Arrange for the jeep to collect you early the next morning, and agree the price for both days together.

If you are going back to Thal, the evening is free for the bazaar and an early night before the long drive.

If it rains: do the waterfall first and skip the walk at Kala Chashma. Don't let the driver cross a side stream that is running high and brown, and start back earlier than planned. In a heavy storm, stay where you are until it passes.

Day 3: back to Islamabad

The drive home is as long as the drive in, and the valley road is the part to finish in daylight.

1. 6 am: if you slept in the forest, the jeep collects you. You are back in Thal by about 7.
2. 7 am: leave Thal. If you slept in Thal, this is your start.
3. About 10 to 11 am: back on the N-45 near Dir. Fuel up if needed.
4. Early afternoon: lunch in Timergara or Chakdara.
5. About 5 to 6 pm: Islamabad.

Where to sleep on each night

Night 1 in Thal is the easy choice for everyone. Night 2 is where you decide what kind of trip this is:

• A forest camp for the river, the trees and the quiet. You need a jeep drop and pickup, which costs more, and an early start on day three. Better for groups of friends and couples.
• Thal again for a proper room and a later start home. Better for families and anyone who sleeps badly in the cold.

If you have a fourth day

A fourth day turns this from a sprint into a holiday. The best ways to use it:

• Split the drive in. Leave Islamabad in the afternoon, sleep in Timergara or Dir, and reach Thal by midday or early afternoon with time to go into the forest.
• A second day in the valley. Spend it walking up beyond Kala Chashma towards the meadows of Dojanga, or doing nothing at a riverside camp.
• Jahaz Banda. The high meadows need their own jeep run and walk and at least one night up there, so add two days rather than one.

Starting from Lahore or Swat

From Lahore, add about four and a half hours of motorway to reach Islamabad, which makes day one impossible in a single stint. Either drive to Islamabad the evening before, or leave Lahore late at night so you pass Islamabad at dawn, with two drivers sharing the wheel.

From Swat, drive down to Chakdara and follow the same route from there, or, in high summer, cross the Badgoi Pass by jeep from Utror near Kalam to the Thal side of Kumrat. That turns this plan into a loop, but it needs a hired 4x4 and a full day.

What to pack for three days in Kumrat

• A warm jacket and hat, even in July; forest nights can fall to 10 °C or lower
• A rain jacket and shoes with grip for wet rocks
• A torch or head torch, and power banks
• Cash for the whole trip, withdrawn in Timergara or Dir
• CNIC for the checkposts on the Dir road
• Snacks and water for the drive, and any regular medicine
• A sleeping bag if you plan to camp
• Offline maps, downloaded before you lose signal above Dir

Is a three-day Kumrat trip worth it?

Yes, if you go in with the right expectations. You will spend two days mostly in the car for one day in the forest, and that one day, with the waterfall in the morning, a long lunch at Kala Chashma and an evening by the river, is the reason to make the trip. Share the driving and it is very manageable.

It is not the right plan for young children, anyone who struggles with long drives, or anyone hoping to walk to Jahaz Banda or Katora Lake.
