Kumrat Valley in October: Autumn Colours and Cold Nights

Kumrat Valley in October is quiet, cold and, for a couple of weeks, gold. The summer crowds have gone, the monsoon is over, and the walnut, poplar and birch trees scattered through the forest turn yellow against the dark deodars. The jeep track from Thal is usually still open, but forest nights drop to around freezing and camps start closing for the winter, so the first half of the month is the safer bet.

What is Kumrat like in October?

October is the month the valley empties. The storms of July and August have passed and the air is usually clear and still. Midweek you may have a stretch of river to yourself; at weekends groups still drive up, but nothing like the summer queues on the jeep track.

Mornings start cold, with mist lifting off the Panjkora, and by late morning it is warm enough to sit in the sun without a jacket. Dir town, at about 1,420 metres, averages a high of about 25 °C and a low of about 7 °C in October, according to long-term NOAA records. The forest is roughly 1,000 metres higher, and air cools by about 6 °C for every 1,000 metres you climb, so expect pleasant afternoons and nights close to freezing.

Rain is less of a worry than in summer: Dir records about 50 mm in an average October against nearly 84 mm in September. A cold front can still bring a wet day and snow on the ridges, so check the forecast before you leave and again in Thal.

Where is the autumn colour?

Most of the Kumrat forest is deodar, blue pine and fir, which stay green all year. The gold comes from the broadleaf trees growing among them: Indian horse-chestnut, walnut, Himalayan poplar and, higher up, Himalayan birch. They don't grow in solid stands like the conifers, so autumn here is not a hillside of orange but a dark forest lit by single yellow trees and small groups of them, with more colour along the river channels where the grass and bushes turn.

To see it at its best:

• Timing. The colour usually runs from late September to the middle of October. It follows the first frosts rather than the calendar, and trees higher up the valley turn first.
• Light. The valley is deep, and the sun leaves the forest floor well before sunset. The yellow trees look best in the first two hours of direct sun and the last hour before the ridges cut it off.
• Walk. Follow the river channels near the main camping area and the track towards Kala Chashma, where the forest opens out beside the water. You see far more on foot than from the back of a jeep.

How cold are October nights, and how do you sleep warm?

Cold enough that it decides where you sleep. A tent by the river in the first week of October is fine with the right kit. By the third week, frost on the flysheet is likely, and a wooden hut or a room in Thal is more comfortable, especially for children.

Whatever you sleep in:

• Bring a sleeping bag rated to below freezing, even if the camp provides quilts, and ask how many quilts each bed gets.
• Sleep off the ground. A mattress or thick mat matters as much as the bag, because the cold comes up from below.
• Change into dry clothes before bed, and wear a warm hat and socks.
• Never take a gas heater, coal or a brazier into a tent or closed hut. Carbon monoxide builds up without warning and kills people in closed rooms in Pakistan every winter. Warm up by the fire outside, then go to bed in layers.

Early October or late October?

The first half of the month

The better choice for most people. Most camps are still running, jeeps are easy to find in Thal, the colour is at or near its best, and there are about eleven and a half hours of daylight.

The second half of the month

Colder, darker and emptier. More camps have packed up and the colour is fading, but you get the valley almost to yourself. It suits people happy to sleep in Thal and go into the forest by day.

When does the season end?

There is no fixed date. The season winds down through the second half of October as camps close and the nights harden, rather than ending with one snowfall. The first real snow varies from year to year: after a long dry autumn in 2024, Kumrat's first winter snowfall came only in mid-January 2025, Dawn reported. Other years bring an early storm. Don't plan a forest trip for November.

What is still open in October?

• The forest, Kumrat waterfall and Kala Chashma: usually reachable by jeep from Thal all month, weather permitting.
• Forest camps: many run from about May to September, and some close during October. Phone ahead, and keep a room in Thal as your fallback.
• Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake: possible in early October for well-equipped walkers, with nights well below freezing. Not a plan for late October.
• The Badgoi jeep route to Kalam: ask in Thal whether it is still open rather than planning around it.
• The crossing at Thal: the bridge linking Thal bazaar to the Kumrat road collapsed under a loaded truck on 2 November 2025. Ask your hotel how vehicles are crossing now.

Planning an October trip

1. Go midweek, when the valley is at its quietest.
2. Allow at least three days from Islamabad. Our three-day Kumrat itinerary works in October; just move every start time earlier.
3. Reach Thal by early afternoon. With sunset before six, a late start means driving the valley road in the dark.
4. Book by phone and check the camp is still open the week before.
5. Carry cash from Timergara or Dir; there are no ATMs in the valley.
6. Pack for winter nights: down jacket, fleece, thermals, gloves, warm hat, sleeping bag and torch.

Is it safe to go to Kumrat in October?

The security picture doesn't change with the season. The UK government currently advises its citizens against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir and to the N-45 road through them, and there have been militant attacks on police in both Dir districts in 2026, including an overnight gun battle in Upper Dir in August. In neighbouring Swat, a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station killed 17 people on 2 August 2026.

Pakistani tourists still visit Kumrat, and none of these incidents targeted visitors. Check the local news and police advice before you set out, drive only in daylight, and be ready to postpone. Who October suits, and who it doesn't

October suits couples, groups of friends, photographers and anyone who dislikes crowds and doesn't mind the cold. Go if you want the forest quiet and the light low and golden, and you are happy to trade evenings by the river for early nights under heavy quilts.

It suits families with small children less well, unless you sleep in Thal, and it is the wrong month if you want warm evenings outdoors or every camp open. Go in September instead: the monsoon is over, the crowds have thinned, and the nights are still mild enough to sit out.
