The best KPK destinations in summer are the places above about 2,000 metres: Naran and the Kaghan lakes, Shogran, and the Galiyat towns of Nathia Gali and Thandiani. All of them are 10 to 20 degrees cooler than Lahore, Peshawar or Islamabad in June and July. Height is what you are buying, so this guide is organised by altitude rather than by fame.
Summer is also monsoon in the hills, and it is when the roads are busiest. The sections below cover what each place is like from June to August, what to check first, and where the current safety advice matters.

Which places are actually cool in summer?
The rule of thumb is that you lose about 6 degrees for every 1,000 metres you climb. A day of 40 degrees in the plains becomes a comfortable mid-20s at 2,400 metres, and the nights need a jacket. Wikipedia describes Naran's summer temperature as rarely exceeding 15 degrees, while travel sites quote June highs of 20 to 25; both agree on cool nights, so pack for that.
Below about 1,500 metres, hill towns are only a little cooler than the plains. If a package or hotel calls somewhere a "hill station" at that height, expect warm afternoons.
Naran and the Kaghan Valley (about 2,409 m)
Naran is the summer default, and for good reason. It sits at about 2,409 metres, roughly 119 kilometres from Mansehra, on the Kunhar river. From here you reach Saif ul Malook (3,224 metres, about 9 kilometres away by jeep) and, further up the valley, Lulusar and the Babusar road.
Lakes and upper roads open in stages. Saif ul Malook and Lulusar are generally reachable from about May, and Babusar Top usually opens around mid-June; snow and landslides can move those dates in either direction. Naran is very crowded in July and August, and hotels fill. Book ahead, and start the lake trips early, before the jeep traffic builds.
Shogran (about 2,362 m)
Shogran is a small meadow plateau above Kiwai in the Kaghan valley, reached by a steep jeep road. It is a quieter, cheaper base than Naran, with views to Makra peak and the Siri and Paye meadows above it. It suits families who want a cool night without Naran's traffic. Nathia Gali and the Galiyat (about 2,400 m)
Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia are the nearest cool option to Islamabad, at about 50 to 80 kilometres depending on where you stop. Altitudes around 2,400 metres keep evenings pleasant, and the pine forest gives shade in the afternoon. It rains often in July and August, and fog can drop over the road in minutes, so drive in daylight.

Thandiani (roughly 2,700 m)
Thandiani, above Abbottabad, is higher than Nathia Gali and much less developed. It is a place for a cool day out or a night in basic accommodation, with views over the Hazara hills. Facilities are thinner, so bring food and cash, and check the road is open after rain.
Swat, Kalam and the northern valleys
Kalam, at about 2,000 metres and 99 kilometres north of Mingora, has been one of KPK's most popular summer valleys; July is its warmest month at about 24 degrees on average. Kumrat, Chitral and the Kalash valleys are also summer favourites.
They need a frank note. See the safety section below: the UK government advises against all travel to Swat, Upper and Lower Dir and the Kalash valleys, and in 2026 there have been serious attacks in that region. Pakistani families still travel there in summer, but the situation changes, and we would not plan a trip there without checking current news first. Is it safe to travel in KPK in summer?
It depends on where. The UK's Pakistan travel advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Swat, Upper and Lower Dir, Peshawar, Buner and the Kalash valleys, and against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas. Recent incidents include a suicide bombing at Kabal, Swat, on 2 August 2026, in which 17 people died, and an attack at Laram Top, Lower Dir, on 16 July.
Naran and the Kaghan valley, Shogran and the Galiyat towns are not on that list, and Pakistani visitors continue to travel to them. Even so, check local news and current police advice the day before you set out, and carry your CNIC for checkposts. Monsoon, roads and timing
July and August bring the heaviest rain in the hills. That means landslides on the Kaghan road and around Balakot, slow traffic, and occasional closures. Leave one spare day, keep your fuel tank full, and avoid driving mountain roads at night or in heavy rain.
June and September are the calmer months: cool, less crowded, and with fewer rain delays. If your dates are flexible, pick them over the July and August peak.

- Couples and friends who want lakes and scenery: Naran and Shogran.
- Anyone short on time from Islamabad: the Galiyat, as a weekend trip.
- Travellers who want to avoid crowds: go in June or September, or choose Shogran or Thandiani over Naran.
