Free Things to Do in Lahore: Sights, Parks and Evenings

There are enough free things to do in Lahore to fill two days without buying a single ticket. Badshahi Mosque, Wazir Khan Mosque, the Walled City lanes, Greater Iqbal Park with Minar-e-Pakistan, Bagh-e-Jinnah, the Sunday book bazaar and the Wagah border ceremony all have no entry charge, as far as recent sources report. What you pay for is food, transport, and the paid sites next door, such as Lahore Fort.

"Free" in Lahore usually means free to enter. Expect to leave a small tip at the shoe stand, and treat any fee you read online, including on this site, as something to check at the gate.

Badshahi Mosque

Reason to go: the courtyard alone is the reason. It covers about 25,600 square metres, and stepping barefoot across it is the best free experience in the city. Entry is reported as free in 2026, with a small payment or tip for shoe storage. A Rs50 ticket was announced in December 2021 for this area, but recent accounts describe entry as free, so carry small notes and follow what is posted.

Wazir Khan Mosque and the Walled City lanes

Reason to go: the tile work, and the walk to it. Wazir Khan Mosque is about 260 metres inside Delhi Gate, and entry is reported as free, with donations welcome for its restoration. The lanes around it are free to walk, and they are the best way to see the old city at street level.

Greater Iqbal Park and Minar-e-Pakistan

Reason to go: it is a large public park around the 70-metre monument, and it is where Lahore families spend their evenings. Entry to the park and the monument grounds is reported as free in 2026, with visiting hours of roughly 8 am to 10 pm on some sites. Hours differ between sources, so check on the day.

Bagh-e-Jinnah

Reason to go: it is Lahore's big central garden, formerly Lawrence Gardens, laid out in 1860 and about 141 acres. Entry and parking are reported as free. Sources give different hours, from roughly 5 or 6 am to 8 or 10 pm, so treat those as a range. It works for a morning walk, and the Quaid-e-Azam Library is inside (visiting it is for members and students, not general visitors).

Tip: go early, when joggers and walkers have the paths, and stay away from the hottest part of the day between May and September. More in our Bagh-e-Jinnah guide.

Sunday book bazaar in Old Anarkali

Reason to go: it is a weekly open-air second-hand book market of about 70 years, running along the service road that faces Pak Tea House, the National College of Arts gallery and Lahore Museum. Browsing is free, and books are sold in English and Urdu. The stalls are set up after dawn prayers and packed away around sunset. It exists partly because Urdu Bazaar shops close on Sundays.

Wagah border ceremony

Reason to go: the daily flag-lowering ceremony is a spectacle of drill and crowd noise, and it has no ticket. It is about 23 to 24 km from central Lahore. Since the tension of May 2025 the format has been scaled down: the soldiers do not shake hands and the gates stay closed, and crowds on the Pakistani side have been smaller. The UK government's advice (updated 22 September 2026) says the crossing itself is closed but visitors can still attend the ceremony.

Data Darbar

Reason to go: it is the city's best-known Sufi shrine, and visitors are welcome without a ticket. Dress modestly, cover your head, and expect crowds. Keep valuables close, and be ready for security checks at the gate. See the Data Darbar guide.

What looks free but is not

Lahore Fort, the Sheesh Mahal and Lahore Museum all sell tickets, and prices differ for Pakistani and foreign visitors. Our Lahore Fort ticket page has the current picture. The Fort stands right beside Badshahi Mosque, so you can see the mosque free and pay only for the Fort if you want it.

A free day in order

1. Walled City in the morning: Delhi Gate, Wazir Khan Mosque and the lanes.
2. Badshahi Mosque in the late afternoon.
3. Greater Iqbal Park after sunset.

This list suits students, families on a budget and anyone with a short stay who wants the main sights without ticket queues. It does not cover food, which is where most of the spending goes. Is Lahore safe for these free visits?

Lahore is not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against, and Pakistani visitors use all of these places daily. The UK does warn of an ongoing risk of terrorism across Pakistan, especially at tourist sites, religious gatherings and rallies. Keep your phone out of sight in crowds, and check local news for protest closures before setting out.
