Map apps quote about 6 hours 20 minutes for the whole thing, but that assumes the mountain road behaves like a motorway. Plan on 10 to 13 hours including stops.

What is the route from Faisalabad to Naran?
- Faisalabad to Islamabad by motorway. You join the motorway network at Faisalabad and reach the M-2 towards Islamabad. One route guide gives this leg as about 325 km in roughly 4 hours; bus schedules run longer.
- Islamabad to Abbottabad on the Hazara Motorway (M-15). Guides put this at roughly 120 km and about 2 hours.
- Abbottabad to Mansehra to Balakot. The road narrows and traffic thickens, particularly in the tourist season.
- Balakot to Naran on the N-15. About 82 km, usually 2.5 to 4 hours, longer after rain.
Naran sits at roughly 2,400 metres, so you climb steadily on the last leg. The final section between Kaghan and Naran is where landslides most often slow traffic.
How long does it really take?
The two motorway stretches are quick. The Kaghan road is what decides your arrival time. Sources say Balakot to Naran normally takes about 3 hours but can stretch to 5 or 6 after a heavy downpour, and that Eid or 14 August weekends can add an hour or two around Mansehra and Balakot.
If you leave Faisalabad at 5 am and everything goes smoothly, you can reach Naran by mid to late afternoon. Leaving at 9 or 10 am makes it likely that you drive the last stretch in the dark, and we would not recommend that on this road.
Should you break the journey?
For families, yes. Two sensible options:
- Stay in Islamabad or Abbottabad the night before and start the mountain section fresh in the morning. It costs a night but removes the long day.
- Overnight in Balakot and take the last 82 km early next day. See hotels in Balakot for what is there.
If you are driving yourself and the driver is doing the whole day, share the wheel. Fatigue is a bigger risk on this road than the road itself.
Bus or car from Faisalabad?
There is no direct Faisalabad to Naran bus. Rome2rio lists Faisal Movers from Faisalabad to Islamabad, then a connection onward. Expect a total of well over 13 hours by bus. Hiring a car with a driver for the whole way costs far more than the bus, and a taxi for this distance is rarely a bargain. If you are travelling in a group of four or more, sharing a hired car usually works out better than buying separate bus tickets plus a local transfer at the end.
Is Naran road open? Seasons and closures
The Kaghan road is generally open from April to October. In winter the road often closes beyond Kaghan because of snow. Is the route safe?
The UK government advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, but the Kaghan road turns off at Mansehra towards Balakot and is not on that list. Pakistani families drive to Naran every summer. Even so, check local news and police advice before you leave, especially for the Mansehra and Balakot section, and follow any road advisories. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, since it can void travel insurance.
Is it worth going from Faisalabad?
Yes, if you can give it three days at least. A weekend from Faisalabad is mostly spent on the road. With two nights in Naran you get one proper day at Saif ul Malook and Lalazar, which is the reason to go. If you only have two days, a closer hill station makes more sense.
