A five-day Astore itinerary from Islamabad works best as two days on the road each way, with Rama Meadows on day two and a Minimarg and Rainbow Lake overnight in between. That fits the valley's two easiest highlights into a trip that most families can manage, without trying to add Rupal or Deosai on top, which would need more time than five days allows.
This plan sets out each day, the driving involved, and what to drop if you have only four days or want to add a fifth.

The plan in brief
- Day 1: Islamabad to Chilas (or Besham). The long first leg up the Karakoram Highway.
- Day 2: On to Astore town, then Rama Meadows in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Astore to Minimarg and Domel, over the Burzil Pass, with a night at the tent camps.
- Day 4: Domel back to Astore, then start the drive south to Chilas or Besham.
- Day 5: Chilas or Besham back to Islamabad.
Five days reaches Rama and Minimarg comfortably, if the Burzil Pass is open and the checkposts cooperate. It does not leave room for Rupal or Deosai as well; treat those as reasons to come back rather than add-ons to squeeze in.
Day 1: Islamabad to Chilas
About ten to thirteen hours up the Hazara Motorway and the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Kohistan. Leave very early to be through the narrowest, slowest stretches in daylight. Day 2: Chilas to Astore, then Rama Meadows
- Morning: Chilas to Thalichi, about an hour and a half, then the turn onto the Astore road.
- Thalichi to Astore town, about two hours up the gorge, arriving around midday.
- Check into Astore town, have lunch, and arrange a jeep for Rama if you haven't already.
- Afternoon: up to Rama Meadows, about an hour by jeep. Walk the forest paths around the meadow, or push on to Rama Lake if you have the afternoon free and everyone is up for a four- to five-hour round trip.
- Sleep at Rama or back in Astore town, depending on whether you have booked a room at the meadow.

Day 3: Astore to Minimarg and Domel
This is the longest and most demanding day of the trip, so start at first light.
- Leave Astore by dawn. Checkposts on the way have stopped letting vehicles through from early or mid-afternoon in past seasons, so an early start is not optional.
- Astore to Chilim, about two hours. A jeep from town onward is the sensible choice, even if you drove your own car up the valley.
- Register at Chilim, then continue by 4x4 over the Burzil Pass. Snow can lie beside the road well into summer, and the crossing itself takes a couple of hours with the checkposts.
- Down to Minimarg, then on to Domel, about 40 to 50 minutes further, for Rainbow Lake.
- Sleep at the tent camps at Domel if you have booked one from Astore, or turn back the same day if you have not; a same-day round trip is possible but exhausting.

Day 4: Domel to Astore, then south
- Early start from Domel, back over the Burzil to Astore, allowing the same two to three hours it took the day before.
- Afternoon in Astore town to rest, or push straight on if you are ahead of schedule.
- Drive south to Chilas or Besham, positioning for the last leg home the next day.

Day 5: Back to Islamabad
The long drive south, ten to seventeen hours depending on where you overnighted. Leave early, and don't plan anything for the evening you arrive.
Shortening or lengthening the trip
Four days: drop the Minimarg overnight and do Rama as your only side-valley day. Rama has no checkposts and a far more reliable season than Burzil Pass, so it halves the risk in the plan.
Six or seven days: add a day in the Rupal valley, or a rest day in Astore town between Rama and the Minimarg push, which also gives you slack if the Burzil road is closed the day you planned to cross.
Who this itinerary suits
It suits travellers who want both sides of Astore's best-known trips, Rama's forest and lake, and Minimarg's remoteness, and who are comfortable with two long, early-start driving days in a row. It is a tiring five days, more time on the road than at any one place.
It suits you less if anyone in the group struggles with long jeep rides, if your dates are fixed and can't flex around a closed checkpost, or if you would rather spend the same five days somewhere with more certainty, such as Hunza. Do I need a 4x4 for this itinerary?
Beyond Chilim towards Minimarg, only 4x4 vehicles are allowed, so hiring a jeep in Astore for the side valleys is the simplest approach.
What if the Burzil Pass is closed when I arrive?
Use that day for the Rupal valley instead, or extend your stay at Rama. Confirm the pass and checkposts the evening before you plan to cross.
Can children do this itinerary?
Rama suits most children who are used to a jeep ride and a short walk. The Minimarg day is longer and more demanding, and worth thinking through for younger children.
Is this itinerary possible without a car?
Coaches and NATCO services reach Astore, but the side trips need a hired jeep either way, so most visitors drive or fly to Gilgit and hire transport from there.
Is the Karakoram Highway route safe for overseas visitors?
Pakistani travellers use it all year, but as of September 2026 the UK government advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, through Besham and Dasu. In summer the road over the Babusar Pass avoids that stretch. If you hold a foreign passport, check your own government's advice before you go, because travelling against it can void your insurance. Everyone should check local news and road conditions before setting out.
