The easiest weekend getaways from Karachi are in Sindh: Thatta and Keenjhar Lake for history and water, and Ranikot Fort for a day among the Kirthar foothills. Kund Malir on the Makran Coastal Highway is the popular beach and desert run, but it lies in Balochistan and needs more care. Gorakh Hill, the only real hill station in reach, is a long drive and a stretch for two nights.

Thatta, Makli and Keenjhar Lake: the easy weekend
If you have one free weekend and no plan, go to Thatta. The old capital of lower Sindh is around one and a half to two hours from the city on the National Highway, and it holds two of the province's most important sites.
- Makli Necropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering tombs from the 14th to 18th centuries. Plan a morning here, and see our page on the Makli Necropolis.
- Shah Jahan Mosque is a short drive away and known for its brickwork and tile decoration.
- Keenjhar Lake lies about 18 km from Thatta town and around 120 km from Karachi. It is a big freshwater lake where families boat and picnic, best from November to March when it is not too hot.
One night in Thatta or a lakeside guesthouse is enough. Spending two nights here would stretch it, so consider adding Ranikot on Sunday.
Ranikot Fort: the Great Wall of Sindh
Ranikot is a huge fortification in the Kirthar foothills near Sann in Jamshoro District, with walls said to run about 30 km. It is usually reached in about three hours from Karachi by the motorway and the Indus Highway, some 260 km. There is little or no fee to enter according to recent listings, and it is open through the day.
The distance makes it better as an overnight than a rushed day trip. Many people combine it with a night in Hyderabad or Jamshoro. Roads within the fort area are rough, so a high-clearance car is more comfortable, and bring your own food and water. Our note on getting to Ranikot Fort has more on the route.
Kund Malir and the Makran Coast
Kund Malir is the beach most Karachi groups mean when they say a weekend by the sea. The drive is 3 to 4 hours on the Makran Coastal Highway, which is paved and dramatic, running past Hingol National Park's rock formations.
Practical points:
- Season: October to March is the comfortable window, with November to March best. Summer is very hot and the sea is rough, and high tide season runs from around June to August.
- Fuel and food: Zero Point, at the start of the coastal highway, is the last dependable place for fuel and proper meals. After it services are minimal.
- Facilities: There are few toilets, shops or shade at the beach. Resorts and serviced camping now exist nearby, in the PKR 15,000 to 20,000 range, according to recent reports. Prices change and we have not verified any of them.
- Documents: Carry your CNIC. There are army and police checkpoints along the highway and registration is routine.

Is Kund Malir safe?
Kund Malir and the whole Makran coast lie in Balochistan. The UK government advises against all travel to Balochistan, and the advice can void travel insurance for foreign passport holders. There are recurring security concerns in the province, which is why the highway has regular checkpoints.
Pakistani travellers from Karachi still go, in daylight, usually in groups. Check local news and current police advice in the days before you travel, leave early enough to return before dark, and do not attempt the drive alone. If the security picture worsens, choose one of the Sindh options above instead.
Gorakh Hill: the Sindh hill station
Gorakh Hill is a plateau of about 2,300 metres in the Kirthar Range, 94 km northwest of Dadu, and around 420 km and eight hours from Karachi. The highway is maintained as far as Wahi Pandhi, about two hours before the top. From there the last stretch is rough and normally done in a jeep or 4x4.
It is cool in summer and offers the only real hill-station feel in the province, but it is a heavy weekend. Reaching it on Friday night and returning Sunday means most of your time in the car. Dadu is in northern Sindh, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Sindh north of Nawabshah. Check current advice for that route before going.
The beaches close to the city
Karachi's own coast, including Hawkes Bay, French Beach and Sandspit, is fine for an afternoon, not a weekend. Sindh authorities have banned swimming at city beaches during monsoon and around Eid ul Adha in recent years, and picnickers have been stopped from visiting unguarded beaches, so check the notice for your dates. - Couples and friends who like a long drive: Kund Malir, going in winter and in a group.
