Yes, a Kund Malir day trip from Karachi is doable, but it is a long day by any measure: roughly eight to ten hours in total once you include the drive, the beach and reasonable stops, and it only works if you leave before sunrise. Treat 6 am as the latest sensible departure, not an ambitious one, and be ready to cut stops rather than cut short the time you spend on the road home before dark.

Does the maths actually work?

Map apps suggest the drive alone takes around six hours there and back, but that ignores the traffic getting out of Karachi, a breakfast stop, and the checkposts along the way. A realistic figure is closer to eight hours of driving across the whole round trip. Add even a modest two to three hours at the beach, and the day runs to ten or eleven hours from the moment you leave your house to the moment you get back.

That is a demanding day, not an impossible one. It is comparable to a long one-day drive anywhere in Pakistan, and thousands of people from Karachi do it every winter. What makes it work is starting early enough that a slow morning, heavy traffic through Hub, or a longer stop than planned does not push your return drive into the dark.

An early-start plan that leaves you real time at the beach

This is built around a 6 am departure and a winter day, when sunset comes earlier and margins are tighter. In summer you gain roughly ninety minutes of daylight at the end of the day, which gives a little more room.

1. 5:30 am: leave home, aiming to be past the busiest parts of Karachi before the morning traffic builds.
2. 6 to 6:30 am: clear the city and reach Hub. This stretch is often the slowest part of the whole trip, so don't count on making it up later.
3. 7:30 to 8 am: breakfast at Winder or fuel and a stop at Zero Point. Fill the tank completely at Zero Point; it is the last reliable fuel before the beach.
4. 8 to 10 am: Zero Point to Kund Malir, the longest single leg, through the empty stretch of highway and into Hingol National Park.
5. 10 am: arrive at Kund Malir. Take a hut before they fill up, and settle the price straight away.
6. 10 am to 1:30 pm: the beach. A walk while the sand is still cool, a swim if the sea is calm, and lunch around midday so you are not waiting on a busy kitchen.
7. 1:30 to 2 pm: on the road back, in winter. In summer you can hold this to 3 to 3:30 pm.
8. 6 to 6:30 pm: back in Karachi, with the last hour or so of the drive in fading light rather than full darkness.

What to skip if you start late

If you leave later than planned, the honest move is to cut the day short rather than push the return drive into the dark. In order of what to drop first:

3. A long lunch or a slow afternoon at the hut. Eat earlier than feels natural, and start back while there is still a comfortable buffer before sunset.

The highway's daylight limits, and why they matter to a day trip

This route is not one where you can simply decide for yourself what counts as a reasonable finish time. Following an attack on bus passengers on the coastal highway in March 2025, the Gwadar district administration banned public transport from running on the Makran Coastal Highway at night, and set specific departure windows for coaches: transport heading from Karachi towards Gwadar was restricted to leaving between roughly 5 am and 10 am, so that it arrives before nightfall.

That notification is aimed at public transport, but the reasoning applies just as much to a private car. Help is far away on this road, phone signal is unreliable, and a breakdown or an incident after dark is a far bigger problem here than almost anywhere else within a day's drive of Karachi. Treat 6 am as your own departure deadline and being off the coastal highway by sunset as a firm rule, not a guideline. Who should do this as a day trip, and who shouldn't

A day trip suits a fit group with a reliable vehicle, more than one driver able to share the return leg, and a genuine willingness to leave before sunrise. It does not suit families with very young children who cannot cope with ten hours in the car, anyone travelling with older parents for whom a long, hot day is a real strain, or a group whose only realistic departure time is mid-morning.

If an early start is not realistic for your group, the better plan is an overnight at Kund Malir rather than forcing a day trip that ends in a dark drive home.
