Swat in winter means snow at Malam Jabba and Kalam, usually from late December to February, and cool, damp days lower down in Mingora. Malam Jabba is the easy snow trip: about 40 km of paved road above Saidu Sharif, a resort that runs all winter with skiing when the snow is deep enough, and a hotel on the slope. Kalam is the harder one: 100 km up a damaged road that heavy snow can close for days, with nights well below freezing. Lower Swat, with its bazaar, museum and Buddhist sites, carries on as normal.

When does it snow in Swat?
Snow falls in upper Swat: at Malam Jabba, Kalam, Miandam, Matiltan, Utror and Gabral. In the 2025–26 season the first heavy snow came in late December, and visitors from Peshawar, Mardan, Islamabad and Lahore arrived with it. Some winters start later, and long dry spells happen even in January, so check with your hotel before you set off rather than assuming the slopes are white.
Mingora and Saidu Sharif, below 1,000 metres, stay mostly above freezing, and their winter weather comes as cold rain and grey days. Our guide to Swat weather by month has the averages for both.
Getting to Malam Jabba in winter
From Mingora, follow the Kalam road north to Manglor, about 12 km from Saidu Sharif, and turn right. The road climbs through villages and forest to the resort, and the whole drive takes about an hour to an hour and a half in good conditions.
The road is paved, but for a day or two after a heavy fall it can be icy, narrowed by snow or shut. In January 2022 about three feet of snow at Malam Jabba blocked it and stranded visitors, who had to be moved to safety.
- Leave early and be off the mountain before dark, when the melt refreezes.
- Carry chains, or go in a four-by-four, after any fresh snow. One car stuck on a bend can hold up everyone behind it.
- Go midweek if you can. Weekend traffic after a snowfall backs up on the narrow road.
- Ask your hotel about the road the evening before and again in the morning.

Getting to Kalam in winter
Kalam is about 100 km from Mingora through Madyan and Bahrain. As of June 2026, stretches between Madyan and Kalam were still badly damaged from the 2022 floods, and snow and ice on broken, one-lane sections can stretch the three-and-a-half to five-hour summer drive much further.
Heavy snow closes the road. In January 2022 about four feet fell in Kalam and cars were trapped on the road; in late January 2026 the Met Office warned of road closures around Kalam during a heavy spell. When that happens, you wait in Bahrain, Madyan or Kalam until the road is cleared.
Plan a winter Kalam trip like this:
- Keep at least one spare day at the end, so a closure doesn't strand you on the day you have to be home.
- Sleep in Mingora or Madyan first and drive the upper road in the morning.
- Use a four-by-four with a local driver who knows the road in snow, or be sure your own car has chains and a confident driver.
- Set a turn-back time. If you haven't reached Kalam by early afternoon, stop in Bahrain for the night.
Once there, the snow is the point: the Ushu forest and the Matiltan road under snow, and in the 2025–26 season a five-day snow festival in Kalam, Matiltan and Ushu run by the Upper Swat Development Authority and the provincial tourism department. The jeep track to Mahodand Lake is closed all winter.
Chains, four-by-fours and driving in snow
In a normal winter the motorways and the road to Mingora are free of snow. Snow driving starts on the climb to Malam Jabba and above Madyan on the way to Kalam.
- Buy chains in Islamabad or Rawalpindi that fit your tyre size, and practise fitting them once at home. Fitting them for the first time on an icy bend is miserable.
- Fit them before the steep part, not after you have started to slide, and take them off on clear road.
- Drive slowly, in a low gear, and don't brake hard on ice. Shaded bends stay icy long after the sunny stretches have cleared.
- Keep the tank full and carry water, snacks, a blanket and a charged power bank. A closure can mean hours in the car.
- Hire a driver if nobody in your group has driven in snow.
Heated hotels: what to ask before you book
In winter, heating matters more than the view. Rooms that are fine in July can be bitterly cold in January, and not every summer hotel in Kalam is set up for winter guests. Before you pay a deposit, ask:
- Is the hotel open on your dates? Don't rely on an online listing.
- What heating does the room have? A gas heater, an electric heater or a wood stove, and whether it is included in the rate or charged extra.
- What happens when the power goes? Ask whether there is a generator, and for which hours.
- Is there hot water all day, and is it heated by gas or electricity?
- Are extra blankets or electric blankets available?
For a comfortable winter night, the choice is between the better hotels in Mingora and Saidu Sharif, with day trips to Malam Jabba; the Pearl-Continental at the resort itself, for waking up beside the slope; and the heated hotels above Kalam bazaar for the full snow experience. What stays open, and what doesn't
Open as normal: Mingora and Saidu Sharif, with the bazaar, restaurants, the Swat Museum and the Buddhist sites around the city. Cool winter days suit sightseeing better than the heat of June.
Open, weather permitting: Malam Jabba, with skiing when there is enough snow; Kalam, Miandam and Madyan, with thinner crowds, fewer places open and roads that depend on the snow.
Closed until spring: Mahodand Lake and the jeep tracks beyond Matiltan, the high lakes and all the summer treks.
Security in winter 2026–27
Security in Swat worsened in 2026, and a suicide bombing at the Kabal police station near Mingora on 2 August killed 17 people. Pakistani tourists are still visiting; check local news and police advice before you go, and stick to the main valley. Is Swat worth visiting in winter?
Yes, for Malam Jabba. For a family from Islamabad or Punjab who want snow, a first try at skiing and a hotel within a day's drive, it is one of the easiest winter trips in the country. Two or three days is enough.
Kalam is for the flexible, with spare days, a suitable vehicle and a heated room booked. Don't make it the fixed centrepiece of a short trip.
