June in Swat is a month of contrasts. Mingora is hot, with a mean daily maximum near 37°C, while Kalam, about a kilometre higher, sits around 26°C in the day and 11°C at night. It is why families from the plains come north in June, and also why the river, the traffic and the hotel bookings all get busy at once.

What is the weather like in Swat in June?
Mingora is the hottest place in the valley. Wikipedia's climate table gives a mean daily maximum of 36.8°C in June and 31 mm of rain, and a local guide describes 25°C to 35°C days. Expect to want air conditioning and to do your walking early or after sunset.
Kalam and the upper valley are the cool retreat. Wikipedia gives an average June high of 26.1°C and a low of 11.0°C in Kalam. Evenings are pleasant and a light jacket is enough. Where should you sleep in June?
Sleep as high as your route allows. A night in Mingora in June is hot, while Madyan, Bahrain and Kalam are noticeably cooler. Book early: June is one of the busiest months, and Kalam's best rooms go first at weekends.
Mingora hotels are usually cheaper in the summer months than in autumn, so a sensible plan is one night in Mingora on arrival and the rest higher. The Swat River in June: what to know
The river runs high in June, fed by snowmelt and rain, and it can change within hours. On 27 June 2025 a group of tourists from two families were swept away near the Mingora bypass after the river surged suddenly. Reports put at least a dozen deaths on that day, and officials were suspended afterwards. The provincial government had extended a ban on swimming and boating in the river just three days earlier.
- Do not go into the river, even ankle-deep, and do not stand on rocks or sandbars in the middle of it.
- A low river is not a safe river. Water can rise quickly when rain falls upstream, out of sight.
- Follow local warnings and any ban on swimming and riverside gatherings.
- Sit on the bank, well back, and keep children close.
What is open, and what to do
The main sights work in June, and it is a good time for higher places. Malam Jabba is at altitude and cooler than the valley floor. Kalam has the Ushu forest and the bazaar. The highest lakes depend on snow and roads, so ask locally before you commit to one and don't assume a road is open because it was last year. Our Malam Jabba guide covers that area.
Keep the middle of the day for something indoors or shaded in Mingora, such as the museum, and do sightseeing early.
Travelling on the road in June
June traffic is heavy on weekends, and the road from Mingora to Kalam slows down when vans, jeeps and family cars all head north together. Leave Mingora early, ideally before 8 am, and expect the last stretch to take longer than the distance suggests. It is about 96 to 99 km from Mingora to Kalam, and three hours is a reasonable estimate on a clear day, not a promise.
Driving back on a Sunday evening is the worst combination. If you can, come down on a weekday or leave Kalam at first light. Is Swat safe to visit in June 2026?
Pakistani families still visit Swat in the summer. However, on 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked the Kabal police station in Swat during a peace rally, killing 17 people, and as of September 2026 the UK government advises against all travel to Swat.

June suits you if you want green scenery, long days and cool air in Kalam, and you can book early and put up with crowds.
