Shogran 2-Day Trip from Islamabad: A Weekend Plan

A Shogran trip from Islamabad fits comfortably into two days. On day one, drive about four and a half to five hours to Kiwai, stop at the waterfall, take a jeep up to Shogran and spend the afternoon in the meadow. On day two, ride up to Siri Paye early, when the peaks are clearest, come back down to Kiwai by midday and be home in Islamabad by evening. Jeeps for both legs cost PKR 10,000 per jeep in 2026.

Below is the plan hour by hour, with the costs we could verify, the variations for small children and winter, and an honest view of whether two days is enough.

Before you go

• Book the hotel. Shogran has few rooms, and on summer weekends and Eid they fill. Our guide to Shogran hotels explains what to ask about views and heating.
• Check the road. In July and August monsoon mudslides can block the valley road around Kiwai for hours. Look at the news the night before.
• Decide on the car. In dry weather a confident driver can take a car up to Shogran; otherwise leave it at Kiwai and take a jeep. Our guide on how to reach Shogran explains the choice.
• Pack a warm layer for everyone, even in July. Siri Paye at seven in the morning is cold.
• Carry cash for jeeps, food and the hotel, drawn before you leave or in Balakot.

Day 1: Islamabad to Shogran

1. Leave Islamabad by 6 or 7 in the morning. An early start is the single biggest improvement you can make to this trip. It keeps you ahead of the weekend traffic beyond Mansehra and gives you the afternoon in Shogran.
2. Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then the N-15 to Balakot. Stop for breakfast along the way, and fill the tank in Balakot.
3. Kiwai by late morning or midday. The waterfall tumbles down beside the main road, with restaurants around it. This is a good place for an early lunch while the jeep is arranged.
4. Jeep up to Shogran, under an hour of steep hairpins through pine forest. Agree with the driver when he will come back for you.
5. Check in by early afternoon. Rest for an hour if the drive has been long.
6. Late afternoon: the meadow and the forest. Walk the open meadow in the middle of Shogran and the paths into the trees around it. By late afternoon many day visitors have gone back down, and the evening light on the peaks is the best of the day.
7. Early night. You want to be up at dawn.

Day 2: Siri Paye, then home

1. Up at first light. If the sky is clear, step outside: the first view of the day is often the best one.
2. Jeep to Siri Paye at 7 or 8, 45 minutes to an hour on a rough track. Go early; cloud often builds over the peaks by late morning.
3. An hour or two at the top. Walk across the upper meadow to Paye Lake and look up at Makra Peak and across to Malika Parbat. Our Siri Paye guide describes what you will find there, including the kiosks and crowds.
4. Back in Shogran by about 11, check out, and take the jeep down to Kiwai. Fit walkers can walk down from Siri Paye instead, which is quicker than the climb and needs the jeep only one way; agree that fare in advance.
5. Leave Kiwai by early afternoon. If you skipped the waterfall on the way up, stop now.
6. Home in Islamabad by evening, traffic permitting. The earlier you leave Kiwai, the more of the drive you do in daylight, which matters most on the stretch between Balakot and Mansehra.

What the weekend costs

We have given only the costs we could verify for 2026, because everything else depends on your car, your hotel and your appetite.

Smaller hotels and guesthouses cost much less than the resorts. Add fuel for a round trip of roughly 400 to 425 km, meals, and tea at the top. Variations on the plan

With small children or older parents

Take jeeps both ways rather than driving the Shogran road, keep Siri Paye to a short stay, and make sure everyone has warm clothes for the top. If anyone struggles with rough rides, skip Siri Paye and spend the morning on Shogran's meadow instead; it is a gentler morning and nobody misses out on the forest.

With a third day

A third day opens up two very different options:

In winter

The same plan works in snow, with three changes: take jeeps both ways, skip Siri Paye unless a local driver is confident and the forecast is clear, and keep a spare day in case the road closes. Our guide to Shogran in winter explains why.

Is two days enough?

For Shogran and Siri Paye, yes. The drive is long enough that a single day trip leaves you only a couple of hours at the top, but one night gives you the evening, the dawn and Siri Paye at its clearest, which is most of what Shogran has to offer.

It is not enough if you want to walk seriously, climb Makra or see the upper valley. It is also a tiring weekend for whoever is driving, with around ten hours at the wheel over two days. If that is a concern, hire a car with a driver, or add a night.
