What is Rani Bagh?
The garden was established in 1861 as a botanical garden under the then Agro-horticultural Society and was originally known as Das Garden. It was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria, and the Urdu name Rani Bagh, "the Queen's garden", stuck. Animals were added later, which is how a botanical garden turned into a zoo.
Today the grounds are divided into four parts: an Eidgah, Abbas Bhai Park, the zoo grounds and the children's and amusement areas. There are also jogging tracks, an artificial lake with boating, food kiosks and parking. The site is reported to hold more than 3,000 trees of over 200 species, and that mature shade is the best thing about it in a Sindh summer.
What is inside the zoo?
The zoo is small. Published figures put the collection at around 21 species of mammals, 41 species of birds and 10 species of reptiles, which is a fraction of what you would see at the bigger city zoos. Expect the familiar Pakistani zoo lineup of monkeys, deer, waterfowl, peafowl and a handful of big cats and other larger animals, in older enclosures.
It is fair to be frank about the condition. Funland, the lake and the rest of the grounds
Funland is the part most children remember. It has the standard fairground rides, including a Ferris wheel, a train and a pirate ship, priced per ride at the gate or ticket counter. Prices are set by the operator, so ask before you queue and carry small notes.
Beyond that, the grounds work as a city park. There is an open-air theatre, a jogging track that is busy at dusk, and plenty of lawns where families spread a mat and eat. The lake has pedal or rowing boats when it is in operation, but the water level and boat availability are not something you can count on.

Directory sites currently list Rani Bagh as open daily from around 12 pm to 8 pm, with adult entry in the tens of rupees and a lower child rate.
