Karachi Zoo: Timings, Ticket Price and What to Expect

Karachi Zoo (the Karachi Zoological Gardens) is open every day from 8 am to 8 pm, and entry costs a token amount: sources give PKR 30 to PKR 50 per person, depending on age and on how recently they were updated. Wednesday is reserved for women and children only. It is a big, old, shady city zoo on Nishtar Road, and it has been through a difficult decade, so it helps to know what has changed before you take children.

This guide covers the ticket, the timings, what you will actually see, the upgrades opened in late 2025 and a frank view on who it suits.

Karachi Zoo timings and ticket price

The zoo opens at 8 am and closes at 8 pm, seven days a week. Its own website and most listings agree on this. Wednesday is set aside for women and children, and men are not admitted that day, so a family with a father should plan for another day.

Entry is very cheap. The zoo's website and most listings say PKR 30. A Dawn report on the December 2025 upgrades quotes PKR 30 for children and PKR 50 for adults. Because the figures differ, bring small notes, expect somewhere in that range, and pay what is posted at the gate. Prices change, and some attractions inside, such as boating or rides, are charged separately.

Where it is and how to get there

The zoo is on Nishtar Road in the Garden area, close to the old city. Empress Market, the Quaid's mausoleum and the National Museum are all within a short drive, which makes it easy to combine with a central Karachi day. Our guide to Empress Market covers the nearest of these.

What you will see

The zoo covers about 33 acres and, by the zoo's own description as reported by Zameen, holds more than 800 animals: mammals, several hundred birds and a large number of reptiles. Expect the following:

• Big cats and bears. Lions, Bengal tigers and Asian black bears are the main draw for children.
• Giraffes and zebras.
• Birds and reptiles, including a Reptile House with snakes, lizards, crocodiles and tortoises.
• Karachi Municipal Aquarium, with a few dozen display tanks.
• A natural history museum of taxidermied animals.
• Gardens. The Mughal Garden and the older tree-lined paths are the pleasant part of the site in the cooler hours.
• A children's play area with small rides.

The zoo no longer has elephants. Madhubala, the last one kept there, was moved to Karachi Safari Park on 26 November 2024 and reunited with two elephants from the same original group, after her companion Noor Jehan died in April 2023. What changed in 2025

For years the zoo drew criticism over animal welfare, including animals kept alone in poor enclosures, and Dawn reported on it repeatedly. A more recent report gives a different picture. On 29 December 2025 the mayor of Karachi inaugurated several projects there, according to Dawn:

• A new two-acre lion enclosure with glass viewing and water for the lions.
• A renovated Reptile House, reopened to the public.
• A visitor tower, new walkways, seating and information boards.
• A pedestrian bridge across a renovated pond, with a boat dock.

Three lion cubs were also born at the zoo in November 2025, and the zoo said they were in good health.

None of this means every enclosure is modern. The site is old and large, and upgrades reach some areas before others. Go with realistic expectations: the newer sections are good, and older cages and enclosures may still look tired.

Best time to go

Go in the first hours after 8 am, or in the last hours before closing in the cooler months. Karachi is hot and humid for much of the year, and there is a lot of walking on open paths, so a midday visit in the summer months is tiring for small children. Weekends and public holidays, especially Eid days, bring very large crowds. If you can, visit on a weekday morning, though not Wednesday unless you are travelling as women and children.

Practical tips

• Bring water and a hat. Shade is patchy, and there is a lot of ground to cover.
• Carry cash in small notes for entry and for the food and toy sellers.
• Keep valuables out of sight. Crowded places in central Karachi attract phone snatchers, as they do elsewhere in the city.
• Don't feed the animals or tease them. Zoo animals are on managed diets.
• Allow two to three hours. That is enough to see the main enclosures, the aquarium and the reptile house.

Is Karachi Zoo worth visiting?

For a low-cost outing with young children, it is fine, and the 2025 changes make it better than its reputation. The setting has old trees and some space to walk, which is unusual in this part of the city.

It is less suitable if animal welfare matters a great deal to you or your family. Older enclosures remain, and the zoo has a well-documented history of criticism.
