Peshawar to Kalam: Route, Distance and Drive Time

The usual way from Peshawar to Kalam is by road through Mardan and Swabi, onto the Swat Motorway (M-16), then through Chakdara and Mingora and up the valley by Bahrain and Madyan. It is a long single day, not a quick hop: published distances range from roughly 240 to 350 km and times from about six to nine hours, so plan to leave early and arrive before dark.

The route, stage by stage

1. Peshawar to the M-1 and Karnal Sher Khan. Take the M-1 east from Peshawar and leave at the Karnal Sher Khan interchange, where the Swat Motorway begins.
2. Swat Motorway to Chakdara. The M-16 is a four-lane motorway of about 81 km in its first phase, opened in June 2019, and it cut the trip from Nowshera to Chakdara from around three hours to one. The second phase, Chakdara to Fatehpur, is still under construction, so the motorway ends at Chakdara.
3. Chakdara to Mingora. Back on the ordinary N-45 and the valley road, with traffic, junctions and bazaars.
4. Mingora to Bahrain and Madyan. The road follows the River Swat upstream. Speeds drop, and weekend and holiday traffic can slow it a lot.
5. Madyan to Kalam. The last part climbs and narrows. Our Kalam road condition guide covers landslides and repairs.

Why the distance figures differ

You will see anything from about 236 km to 350 km online. The difference is mostly which road is measured and where the trip is counted from, since Peshawar is large. Treat the time as the more useful number: a reasonable expectation is a full day, with most of the delay after Mingora, not on the motorway.

Cost and how to travel

The toll for the M-1 is set by the NHA and was revised in July 2026, and the Swat Motorway is also tolled, so check current rates at the toll plazas and bring cash or a card as accepted. We have not verified a current M-16 rate, so we don't print one.

Your options are your own car, a hired car with a driver, or bus and van services to Mingora and then a local vehicle up to Kalam. Above Bahrain most visitors use a jeep or hired car for Kalam's lakes and side valleys; our Kalam jeep fare guide has the local picture.

Alternative routes: not recommended for visitors

Other routes appear on the internet, through Dir or over Besham and the Karakoram Highway. Some run through areas covered by strong security advice, and the Dir route in particular is in one. For a visitor from Peshawar the Mingora route is the only sensible one.

Is it safe?

Swat has seen violence this year. On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked a peace rally near the Kabal police station, killing 17. The UK government advises against all travel to Swat, and to Upper and Lower Dir, and the road passes Malakand and Chakdara, also listed. Pakistani visitors still travel to Kalam and reports indicate tourism is continuing, but check local news, police advice and the district administration before you set out, and travel in daylight.
