St John's Cathedral in Peshawar Cantonment, still widely known as St Johns Church, Peshawar, is the oldest church in the region. Its foundation stone was laid on 23 March 1851, two years after the British annexed Peshawar, and it was finished in 1860. It began as the garrison church of the British frontier army and is now the seat of the Church of Pakistan's Diocese of Peshawar, with regular Sunday worship. It sits beside the Peshawar Garrison Services Club in a security-conscious part of the cantonment, so treat it as a working church you may be allowed to see, not an open monument.
This guide covers the cathedral's history, the building and its memorials, how services work, and what to expect at the gate.

How old is St John's Cathedral?
The cathedral is 175 years old counted from its foundation stone, and the federal heritage survey and other records describe it as the oldest church in the region. It is also one of the earliest British-era churches anywhere in Pakistan.
After the British took Peshawar from the Sikh state in 1849, Christian worship in the city had no proper home. Services were held in a temporary room called the Morton Chapel in Peepal Mandi and in the open air at Company Bagh. Dr Kemp, one of the founders of the Peshawar Mission, pressed for a permanent garrison church, and Archdeacon Pratt of Calcutta laid the first stone in March 1851.
Why did it take nine years to build?
Politics, more than building. Frederick Mackeson, the Commissioner of Peshawar, halted the work, citing security on so sensitive a frontier. Mackeson was assassinated in 1853, and his successor, Herbert Edwardes, was a friend of the missionaries and let the project go forward. The church was completed in 1860 for 11,000 rupees and consecrated by George Cotton, Bishop of Calcutta.
It was renovated for its centenary in 1960, and again in the early 2000s at a cost of about Rs 5 million. When the Church of Pakistan created the Diocese of Peshawar, St John's became its cathedral, in 1982.
What does the cathedral look like?
St John's is a plain, solid building rather than a showpiece. It is a long rectangular hall built of brick, clay and lime, and its tall spires were designed to be seen across the flat cantonment from a long way off. There are three main doors, on the south, north and east sides, and a smaller one on the west.
Inside, the interest is in the memorials. Like the garrison church in Rawalpindi, St John's is full of tablets to British officers and soldiers killed on the frontier with Afghanistan, and some officers are recorded as buried at the church, among them Lieutenant Colonel James O'Bryen. Reading the plaques is a quick lesson in the century of frontier wars that shaped the Khyber and Peshawar.
For contrast, see Peshawar's other historic church, All Saints at Kohati Gate, built in 1883 by missionaries who chose to make it look like a mosque. St John's is the opposite: an English garrison church, built for soldiers in a cantonment.
Can you attend a service at St John's?
Yes. It is a working cathedral with Sunday services, and Christians from across Peshawar attend, especially at Christmas, when the cathedral is decorated and special services are held. We have not found published service times, and they may change, so ask the diocese or the church office in advance. If you go to worship, arrive early to allow for the security check.
How do you visit St John's Cathedral?
The cathedral is in the cantonment beside the Garrison Services Club, an area with military and police security, and churches in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been attacked before, most terribly at All Saints in 2013.
- Get in touch first. There are no published visiting hours. Contact the Diocese of Peshawar, or ask at the gate on a weekday and accept the answer.
- Carry your CNIC. Expect checks at the church gate and possibly on the cantonment roads.
- Avoid service times unless you are there to worship.
- Photographs: ask before photographing inside, and never photograph the guards, the club entrance or any military building.
- Dress modestly and keep visits short.
To get there, take a ride-hailing car or rickshaw and ask for St John's Cathedral or the Peshawar Club in Saddar. It pairs naturally with the Peshawar Museum, also in the Saddar and cantonment side of the city, and with a look at the city's British-era buildings, which our guide to colonial architecture in Pakistan covers.
Is it safe to visit?
The UK government advises against all travel to Peshawar (advice updated 22 September 2026), and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen repeated attacks this year, including the bombing of Kohat Police Lines on 18 September that killed 23. Pakistani visitors still travel to Peshawar, but check local news on the day and follow any instruction from police or guards. Overseas visitors should read their own government's advice, which may say not to go and can affect travel insurance. Our guide to whether Peshawar is safe has the fuller picture.
Is it worth seeing?
For anyone interested in the British frontier, church architecture or Pakistan's Christian community, it is a worthwhile 30-minute stop if you can arrange access. It is not a sight to cross the city for if you have one day and no contact with the church; in that case the museum and the old city come first. Our Christian heritage guide puts St John's alongside the other historic churches of Pakistan, and more Peshawar ideas are on our experiences page.
