Naran on Eid: Traffic, Hotel Rates and Why to Go Early

Naran on Eid is the most crowded the valley gets. Over the three days of Eid al-Adha in 2026, the Kaghan Development Authority counted 128,862 visitors, the road from Balakot to Naran slows to a crawl on such days, and hotels are full. If you go, go early in the day, book well ahead, and expect the trip to take far longer than it does in an ordinary week.

How crowded is Naran on Eid?

Very. Reports from Eid al-Adha in late May 2026 say more than 128,000 visitors reached the valley in three days, drawn by the cool weather, snow-capped mountains, lakes and the Kunhar River. Babusar Top had reopened only days earlier, on 25 May, and added to the flow. The Kaghan Development Authority put staff at key points for guidance and traffic management.

The same thing happened in June 2024. Dawn reported long traffic jams on the Mansehra to Naran and Jalkhad road over the Eid holidays, worst between Balakot and Naran, with thousands of vehicles entering the valley, landslides briefly stopping traffic in places, and a road blockade at Paras caused by construction delays.

The bazaar, the jeep stands and the lake are all crowded at these times. Nothing is closed, but everything is slow.

Which Eid is worth planning around?

• Eid al-Adha has recently fallen in late spring or early summer (June in 2024, late May in 2026), when the road is open. It moves earlier by about eleven days each year, so the dates depend on the moon.
• Eid al-Fitr is a different matter. In 2026 it fell in March, when the road above Kaghan was still shut for winter and did not reopen until April. Any Eid that falls in the cold months means Naran itself may be closed. See our Naran road open or closed guide.

Check where Eid falls against the season before you plan around Naran. A winter Eid is better spent at Kaghan or Shogran.

How to beat the traffic

The road in is the bottleneck, and you cannot fix it, but you can plan around it.

1. Reach Balakot early. Aim to be through Balakot by early morning, before the queue builds. From Islamabad that means an early start; our Islamabad to Naran guide has the route.
2. Travel on the day before the rush, or stay after it. Travel is worst on the first two days of Eid and on the return day. Leaving on the third day, or a day later, is usually easier.
3. Stay at Kaghan or Balakot the first night if you cannot get an early start, and go up in the morning.
4. Do not drive the road after dark on a crowded day, when stopped vehicles and slides are harder to see.
5. Carry water, snacks and fuel. Being stuck in a queue for hours is a real possibility.

Inside Naran, a 2026 order banned two-way traffic in the bazaar and parking in it, so expect to park outside and walk.

What happens to hotel rates on Eid?

Rooms fill first and prices rise. We could not verify specific Eid rates from a reliable source, so we have not printed any. What is safe to say is that the best-located hotels sell out days or weeks ahead, and walk-in availability is poor.

Should you go on Eid?

Go if your dates are fixed by the holiday and you are ready for crowds, slow roads and a full valley. Do not go if you want a peaceful trip, have small children who will struggle with a long jam, or cannot handle a delay.

If you can move your dates, a weekday trip a week or two after Eid gives you the same open valley with far less traffic. July and September are calmer still, though July brings monsoon risk.
