What is the route from Muzaffarabad to Naran?
There is one sensible route. From Muzaffarabad you drive south-east towards Garhi Habibullah, cross into Mansehra district, and continue to Balakot, the gateway town of the Kaghan valley. From Balakot the road follows the Kunhar river north through Kaghan to Naran.
Distances quoted online differ by a few kilometres, which is normal for hill roads measured by different apps. Muzaffarabad to Balakot is roughly 37 to 40 km. Balakot to Naran is reported anywhere from about 82 to 88 km. Treat the total as a range and let your phone's live navigation decide on the day.
How long does the drive take?
The first stretch, Muzaffarabad to Balakot, takes an hour and a half to two hours on the slower estimates, although mapping tools show under an hour. Bends, trucks and village traffic are the reason for the gap. Balakot to Naran takes about two hours on a clear day, and longer in the tourist season when the valley road backs up.
Add a meal or tea stop and a margin for a landslide delay, and four to five hours is a fair plan. If you need to be in Naran before dark in July or August, leave Muzaffarabad by mid-morning at the latest.
What is the road like?
Older forum accounts describe the first stretch in AJK as rough and the section after the provincial border as much better. Road surfaces change quickly after monsoon damage, so take that as a pattern rather than a promise, and ask locally in Muzaffarabad before leaving.
Beyond Balakot the road climbs and narrows into hairpin bends along the Kunhar. In July and August, monsoon rain brings occasional landslides on the Balakot to Kaghan stretch. Mobile signal weakens beyond Balakot and Kaghan, so download offline maps before you leave. Petrol stations in the upper valley are limited.
Stops that are worth making

- Balakot. A sensible lunch and fuel stop before the climb.
- Kaghan town. A shorter break before the last stretch to Naran.
There is no reason to stop between Muzaffarabad and Garhi Habibullah unless you need to. The pay-off comes after Balakot.
Is it safe?
Pakistani families do this drive, and the route through Balakot into Kaghan is not among the areas the UK government lists as no-travel. Two points still apply. It suits anyone who wants to combine Azad Kashmir with Naran without going back to Islamabad first. It saves a long detour, and the scenery is good.
