Getting to Reshian
By public transport, coasters and vans run from Islamabad or Rawalpindi to Muzaffarabad through the day, with one-way fares of roughly PKR 900 to 1,500 as of 2026 depending on the operator and vehicle. From Muzaffarabad, local buses and vans to Reshian cost less again, but expect to pay in cash and check the current fare at the terminal, since prices have moved more than once this year with fuel costs.
By own car, the main cost is fuel. The round trip from Islamabad to Leepa and back is roughly 460 km. At the petrol price in late September 2026 of about PKR 389 a litre, and typical consumption for a small car of 10 to 13 km per litre, that works out to roughly PKR 14,000 to 18,000 in fuel alone, before tolls on the motorway sections. A larger or older vehicle will use more.
Jeep hire from Reshian
Most visitors leave their own car at Reshian and hire a jeep for the valley, and there is no fixed, published rate for this. Drivers set a price on the spot depending on distance, how long you want them to wait at each stop, and whether the trip covers a full circuit of the sectors or just Leepa village. Rather than quote a figure that may already be wrong by the time you travel, agree the total price, the exact sectors covered, the waiting time at each and the return to Reshian before you get in, and ask two or three drivers so you have something to compare. Rooms
The government rest houses at Dao Khan are run by the AJK Tourism and Archaeology Department and the AJK Forest Department; their room rates are set by the department rather than published widely, so confirm the current fee when you book. Private guesthouses in Leepa village are listed online from around PKR 6,500 to 7,000 a night in 2026, though rates vary by property and by season, and rooms are few enough that price is often less of a factor than simply finding one available. Food
There are no restaurant chains or fixed menus in Leepa. Most visitors eat what the guesthouse or a nearby dhaba cooks that day, typically dal, rice, roti and seasonal vegetables, with meat or fresh trout where available. Budget for this as a flat daily rate agreed with wherever you are staying rather than a per-item menu, and carry more cash than you think you need, since there is no reliable card payment once you are past Reshian.
Costing a two-night trip
A rough shape for two people, two nights, sharing a room:
- Transport: either coaster fares both ways, or fuel if driving your own car, plus the jeep hire negotiated at Reshian.
- Accommodation: two nights in a Leepa guesthouse or at Dao Khan.
- Food: three days of meals bought locally.
- Contingency: a spare amount for delays if the road closes for a day, which happens occasionally even in season.
Treat any total you see online, including a sum of the figures above, as a starting point rather than a quote, since jeep hire and room rates are not fixed and move with fuel prices and demand.
Three nights versus two
A third night gives you a proper day in the valley without spending it half in the car, and it is the more comfortable option with children or older relatives. It adds one more night's accommodation and a day of food, but not necessarily another day of transport, since the jeep and fuel costs are largely front-loaded into getting there and back.
