October is when Leepa Valley's terraces turn from green to gold and the red-rice harvest gets under way, making it one of the two or three best weeks of the year to visit. Days are still generally clear and settled, walnut trees are turning yellow and orange on the hillsides, and nights are noticeably colder than in summer. It is also close to the end of the season: the road over Reshian Gali can start seeing its first snow by late in the month.

The rice harvest
Leepa's red rice, the valley's best-known crop, is cut by hand in October. Farmers beat the harvested stalks against long sticks and thresh them along temporarily dug channels, a traditional method that has changed little. The terraces that were green through summer turn gold as the crop ripens and is brought in, and October is generally the month this is at its most visible, following on from the start of the harvest in September.

Walnuts and autumn colour
Walnut trees are widespread through the valley, around the wooden houses and along the terraces, and they turn a mix of yellow, orange and red through October, at the same time as the harvest is ripening and being collected for market. Combined with the gold of the rice terraces and the wooden houses standing among them, this is the look most photographs of Leepa in autumn are trying to capture.
What the weather is actually like
Early October in Leepa is usually clear, with settled daytime weather and far less rain than the July–August monsoon. It cools quickly, though. Days can still be pleasant in the valley itself, at around 1,900 metres, but nights turn cold, and at Dao Khan and Chananian, several hundred metres higher, expect a proper autumn chill after dark rather than a mild evening. Pack accordingly: warm layers for the evening even if the day starts mild.
How late in October can you go?
Early to mid-October is the safer window. By late October the chance of the first snow on Reshian Gali starts to rise, and a spell of bad weather can close the road with little warning. If you are travelling toward the end of the month, build in a spare day and check conditions in Muzaffarabad or Hattian Bala before you commit to the drive. Planning an October trip
- Book ahead. Rooms in the valley and at Dao Khan are few, and October is a popular month for exactly the reasons above.
- Travel early in the month if you can, to reduce the chance of an early closure affecting your trip.
- Pack for cold nights, not just the mild days: a proper jacket, layers and something warm to sleep in if staying at Dao Khan or in the valley.
- Ask locally about the harvest stage. It moves through the valley's sectors at slightly different times depending on altitude and aspect, so what is cut in one village may still be standing gold in another.
Is October the best month, or just a good one?
For colour and for seeing the valley working rather than dormant, October is arguably the best month Leepa has. July and August are greener and warmer but carry the monsoon's rain risk; May is quieter but earlier in the growing season, with less to see in the fields. October trades a little of that reliability for the harvest and the colour, and for most visitors that trade is worth it, provided you go earlier in the month rather than later and keep a spare day for the road.
