June to September: the reliable window
For most visitors this is the safe choice. The road over the ridge is normally open throughout, the valley is at its greenest, and Leepa's rice and maize fields are actively growing. July and August bring the monsoon, with a real chance of a wet day and, occasionally, a landslide closing the road for a few hours; June and early September tend to be drier. Days are warm in the valley itself, at around 1,900 to 2,000 metres, and cooler at Dao Khan and Chananian, which sit several hundred metres higher.
September and October: the harvest
This is when Leepa is best known for its scenery: the rice is cut in September and October, and the terraces that were green in summer turn gold before harvest. The weather is generally more settled than the monsoon months, the light is clearer, and it is also when Leepa's red rice, walnuts and apples are ready, if you want to buy some to take home. Nights are noticeably colder by October, especially at Dao Khan and Chananian.
May and November: quieter, but a gamble
May sees the valley green up as the road reopens for the season, and November can still be clear and mild before winter closes in. Both months carry more risk of the road being blocked for a day or two by a late snowfall in May or an early one in November, so build a spare day into the trip rather than a tight schedule. Why winter is off-limits
From around December to April the road over the ridge is under snow, and Leepa is not somewhere to plan a winter visit around. Even once local traffic resumes with the spring thaw, only 4x4s are typically allowed over the crossing until it is properly cleared. If you want to see snow in Azad Kashmir in winter, look closer to Muzaffarabad rather than planning a Leepa trip for December to March.

- Coolest, clearest weather with the least rain risk: late September and October.
- Fewer other visitors: May or November, accepting the higher chance of a closed road.
