Where is Kharfaq Lake?
Kharfaq is a village on the Skardu–Khaplu road, on the way up the Shyok valley, roughly 70 km from Skardu and short of Khaplu. The hike
The walk from Kharfaq village to the lake takes around three hours, climbing steadily from the valley floor to just over 3,300 metres. It is a proper uphill hike rather than a stroll: allow a full day for the round trip once you add time at the lake and the walk back down.
A few practical points:
- Start early. With three hours up and roughly the same back down, plus time at the top, a Kharfaq day needs most of the daylight hours.
- Carry water and food. There is nothing to buy on the trail.
- Wear proper walking shoes. The path climbs steadily over rough ground.
- Arrange a local guide in the village. The trail is not signposted, and someone from Kharfaq will know the current route and conditions.
- Fitness matters more than technical skill. No ropes or climbing gear are needed, but the sustained climb suits people who walk regularly rather than complete beginners.
What is at the lake
Kharfaq Lake holds trout and other local fish, and the setting, a body of water held in the mountains above the Shyok valley, is the reward for the climb. The water level rises through spring as snow melts, reaching its highest around the middle of July, so the lake looks fullest in high summer. There is no infrastructure at the top: no shelter, no food stalls, nothing beyond the lake and the surrounding high ground.
When to go
July and August are the best months, when the lake is at its fullest and the trail is clear of snow. Outside those months the path can still be snow-covered at the top, and the lake itself is smaller or frozen over in winter. Go with a guide familiar with the current conditions if you are hiking outside the main summer window.
Is it worth the hike?
For fit walkers who enjoy a proper hike over a sightseeing stop, yes. Kharfaq sees far fewer visitors than the sights around Khaplu or Skardu, and the effort of the climb is part of the appeal.
It is not for a family day trip or anyone short on time. A round trip of six hours or more, on foot, rules it out for small children, anyone with limited mobility, or a short Skardu itinerary.
