Islamabad to Thandiani: Distance and Road Notes

Islamabad to Thandiani is roughly 110 to 150 km depending on the source and the route, and the drive takes two to three hours. You take the Hazara Motorway (M-15) from Hasan Abdal to Abbottabad, then the hill road up to Thandiani at about 2,750 metres. The motorway part is easy; the last 30 km or so is narrow, steep and slow.

The route via Abbottabad

1. Islamabad to Hasan Abdal. Take the road towards Taxila and Hasan Abdal, where the Hazara Motorway begins.
2. M-15 to Havelian and Abbottabad. The M-15 runs from Hasan Abdal to Thakot. The Hasan Abdal to Havelian section (47 km) opened in December 2017, and it continues to Mansehra. Leave the motorway for Abbottabad.
3. Abbottabad to Thandiani. From the city, follow the signs for Thandiani, through Kala Pani onward. Distances for this stretch range from about 26 to 38 km.

How long does it take?

Rome2Rio says about two hours, and another guide says about three hours via the motorway. The difference is mostly the hill road. Allow two and a half to three hours in normal traffic, and more on a summer weekend when the road up is crowded.

The road up to Thandiani

The hill road is metalled but narrow, with abrupt turns, and steep in places. Hotels along the way cause congestion, and there are few places to pass. It is fine for a normal car, but not for someone new to hill driving in a hurry.

• Use low gears on the descent rather than riding the brakes.
• Give way to buses and jeeps coming down.
• Fill the tank in Abbottabad, not on the hill.

Winter and snow

Thandiani gets real snow. During heavy snowfall the Abbottabad to Thandiani road has been closed from Kala Pani onwards, and in January 2026 a separate road, Thandiani to Ukhrila and Andarsiri, was closed for 14 days and reopened on 1 February. Check with a hotel or local police before going up in December to February, and carry chains if you go.

What you find at the top

Thandiani sits at about 2,750 metres and was used as a summer retreat in the British period, occupied only in the warmer months. It is quieter than Murree and Nathia Gali, with pine forest and long views on a clear day, and it is a place to walk rather than shop. Our Thandiani guide covers what to do once you arrive.

Summer is April to September, when the weather is pleasant and the hills are green. In July and August rain can bring fog and landslides on the hill road, so leave earlier and keep flexible.

Is it safe?

Thandiani and Abbottabad in Hazara are not on the UK government's list of places to avoid, as at its 22 September 2026 update. The hazards are ordinary mountain ones: bends, fog, rain and snow. Check the weather and local road news before leaving, and do not drive the hill road at night.

A practical tip

Start by 7 am for a day trip. You will get up the hill before the traffic, have time at the top and be back on the motorway before dark. Carry a warm layer even in summer, as it is cooler at 2,750 metres than in Islamabad.

Is it a good day trip from Islamabad?
