How far is Thandiani from Abbottabad, and how long does it take?
The most quoted figure is 37.5 km, which is what Wikipedia gives. Route planners show shorter distances because they measure from the edge of town or via a shortcut, and Tripadvisor reviewers describe a 39 km drive. Use 30 to 40 km as your planning range.
Time matters more than distance. Recent Tripadvisor reviews describe trips of 2 to 3 hours or more during road work, while other guides say about an hour and a half. The road climbs continuously, has hairpins, and hotels and resorts along the way add congestion on weekends. Leave Abbottabad by mid-morning at the latest if you want daylight at the top.
From Islamabad, guides give roughly 147 km and about 3 hours to Abbottabad via the Hazara Motorway, so add the climb for a full-day return trip.
What is the road like?
It is a metalled road that is narrow in places, and reviewers say it demands confident mountain driving. Some stretches have been under construction, so conditions vary from season to season. A normal car can manage it in dry weather, but keep the speed down, use a low gear on descents, and check the brakes before you start.
Two things to remember:
- Downhill drivers should give way where the road is too narrow for two vehicles to pass.
- Fill the tank in Abbottabad. Do not count on a fuel station at the top.
Should you drive, take a taxi or go with a driver?
Drive yourself if you are used to hill roads. If you are not, hire a taxi or a car with a local driver in Abbottabad: they know the bends, the narrow points and where the road is being worked on. Agree the total fare, including waiting time and the return, before leaving. We have no reliable current fare to quote, and fares change with season.
Winter and snow
Thandiani gets real snow. In early 2026 the Thandiani-Ukhrila-Andarsiri road, which serves the villages beyond the top, was closed for 14 days after heavy snowfall and reopened on 2 February (The Nation, 2 February 2026). That is a different road from the one most tourists use, but it shows how quickly the area can be cut off.

Is it safe?
Abbottabad and Thandiani are not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against visiting, but the UK advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway north of Mansehra towards Chilas, and you should not use that route as part of a longer trip. Pakistani tourists visit Thandiani regularly, and the standard advice applies: check local news and police advice before you go, and avoid travelling after dark on the mountain road. Foreign visitors should check their own government's current advice, because it can affect travel insurance.
Is it worth the drive?
For a cooler day out from Abbottabad or Islamabad, yes, if you accept a slow, winding road and a few hours in the car. It is quieter than Nathia Gali, and there are forest walks and views over the ranges. It is not a good choice if anyone gets car sick or if you have only a few hours, since the road eats the time.
