The best halwa puri in Lahore comes from a handful of old shops: Sadiq Halwa Puri, trading since 1880 and now on Railway Road and Ferozepur Road, Taj Mahal Sweets at Taxali Gate for its khoya-rich poora halwa, and Butt Sweets on McLeod Road by Lakshmi Chowk. They open around dawn, and on a Sunday the best of them are crowded by 9 am, so go early.

This guide is about halwa puri alone: the shops Lahoris rank highest, what makes each one different, when they open and what to order. For paye, lassi and the rest of the Lahori breakfast, see our guide to the best nashta in Lahore.

What makes Lahori halwa puri different?

The plate is the same idea as anywhere in Pakistan: puffed fried puri, a sweet semolina halwa, spiced chickpeas and a potato curry, with pickle. What Lahore argues about is the detail. Some shops cook the potatoes with fenugreek, some keep the chana and aloo apart and some mix them. Some serve a stuffed puri, or pathora, on the side. And in the old city, a few shops make their halwa with khoya, thickened milk, rather than semolina alone.

Lahore also eats it heavier and earlier than most cities. Several of the best-known shops open before dawn and are winding down by lunch, because they are breakfast businesses, not restaurants with a breakfast menu.

Which shops make the best halwa puri in Lahore?

The most cited comparison is still the one Dawn's Images ran in October 2015, when its writer ate at five of the city's best-known shops in turn. It ranked them Sadiq, Taj Mahal, Butt Sweets, Karachi Sweet Shop and Chand Shahab. Prices have risen many times since then, but all five names are still the ones Lahoris give.

Sadiq Halwa Puri

Sadiq's family business began in Amritsar in 1880 and moved to Lahore after Partition. The original shop is on Railway Road, and the branch most people know is on Ferozepur Road near Ichhra, close to the Shama metro station. It has other branches around the city too. What sets it apart is the potato curry, cooked with methi, and the puri, fried in desi ghee and soft rather than brittle. The standard plate can come with a stuffed pathora.

Listings put the Ferozepur Road branch open from about 4:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday to Saturday, and from about 4 am to 1 pm on Sunday. It is the best single choice if you only try one.

Taj Mahal Sweets, Taxali Gate

Taj Mahal Sweets sits in a lane at Taxali Gate, across from Badshahi Mosque and behind the fort. Chaudhry Muhammad Akram started it in 1967. It makes two halwas: the ordinary suji version and its own poora halwa, a yellow-brown halwa made with khoya and topped with nuts, which is its best seller. Order a little of both.

It is one of the earliest openers in the city, from about 3:30 am in listings, and it finishes by late morning. It also has more room for families than most old-city shops. Our walled city of Lahore guide suggests a walk to follow it.

Butt Sweets, Lakshmi Chowk

Butt Sweets opened its first shop on McLeod Road at Lakshmi Chowk in 1947 and now has branches across the city. Dawn found the original the cheapest of the five and noted the smell of the freshly fried puri. It is also known for pheni, the fine fried vermicelli that Lahoris eat soaked in milk in Ramadan. Lakshmi Chowk itself is better known for karahi and late nights, which our Lakshmi Chowk food guide covers.

Karachi Sweet Shop, Old Anarkali

At the Mall Road end of the Old Anarkali food street, Karachi Sweet Shop serves its chana and potato separately, and both are noticeably spicier than the old-city shops. It suits anyone who wants a hotter plate, and it is an easy stop before a walk through Anarkali Bazaar.

Chand Shahab Sweets, near Taxali Gate

Chand Shahab, known locally as Shaabu, is another pre-Partition shop near Taxali Gate, on the lane of Peshawari chappal sellers. It serves its halwa puri with mango pickle, which few other shops do, and keeps short hours, about 7 am to noon.

Capri, Gulberg

Capri, in the Liberty Market area of Gulberg III, is the sit-down choice. It has been a breakfast name for years and is known for its crisp puri and its aloo bhujia. It also serves murgh chanay, nihari and hareesa, and it keeps long hours, from about 5:30 am to midnight in listings. It is the easier option with small children or older parents.

When should you go?

  1. Sunday, before 8 am, is the classic halwa puri hour, and the busiest. Families start arriving from about 8, and the queue at Sadiq and Taj Mahal can be long by 9.
  2. Weekdays are calmer. The same shops serve the same food, with a fraction of the wait.
  3. Do not leave it late. Taj Mahal and Chand Shahab finish by late morning, and Sadiq by early afternoon. Halwa that has sat on the counter since dawn is not the same.
  4. Public holidays and the days around Eid bring the biggest crowds of the year.

In Ramadan most of these shops change their hours completely, so check before going. Our Lahore in Ramadan guide explains what stays open.

How much does halwa puri cost in Lahore?

Halwa puri is still one of the cheapest full meals in the city, but almost every figure quoted online comes from before the recent rounds of inflation and is now well out of date. The old-city shops and Butt Sweets are the cheapest; Capri and the Gulberg and DHA restaurants charge several times more for a similar plate. Check the board, carry cash and small notes, and expect to pay a little extra for each additional puri or glass of lassi.

What should you order?

  • A standard plate each, with an extra puri for the table.
  • Both halwas at Taj Mahal, the suji and the poora.
  • The pathora at Sadiq, if it is offered.
  • Lassi or doodh patti to drink. A sweet lassi after halwa puri is very filling, so share one if you have more planned.
  • Halwa to take away. Most shops sell it by weight.

Eat at a busy shop where the oil and the puris turn over quickly. If you are on a short trip and worried about an upset stomach, our guide to whether street food in Pakistan is safe has practical advice.

Which one should you choose?

Pick by the morning you are planning.

  • Doing the fort, Badshahi Mosque or the walled city: Taj Mahal Sweets, then Chand Shahab if you want a comparison.
  • Want the best-rated plate and do not mind the drive: Sadiq on Ferozepur Road or Railway Road.
  • Staying near the Mall or Anarkali: Butt Sweets or Karachi Sweet Shop.
  • With small children or anyone who needs a proper chair: Capri in Gulberg.

Halwa puri suits anyone who likes a rich, sweet and savoury breakfast and does not mind a shared table and a short wait. It is not for a light eater, and it is a poor idea right before a long motorway drive.
