The best halwa puri in Karachi comes from a few long-running names: Tooso in Bahadurabad, trading since 1976, Fresco Sweets on Shahrah-e-Liaquat near Aram Bagh, Dhamthal in Federal B Area for puris fried in desi ghee, and the open-air breakfast tables at Boat Basin in Clifton. Go on Sunday between 7 and 9 am for the freshest puris and the shortest queue, and expect a long wait after 10.

This guide is about halwa puri only: the shops Karachi argues about, what comes on the plate, when each place opens and how to plan a Sunday breakfast around them. For nihari, paye and bun maska, see our wider guide to the best breakfast in Karachi.

What comes on a Karachi halwa puri plate?

A standard plate is two puris, a scoop of semolina halwa, a bowl of chana and a bowl of potato curry. Karachi shops usually serve the potatoes as a thin, sour khattay aloo or a dry spiced bhujia, and many add a chholay ka salan, a looser chickpea curry, alongside the drier chana. Pickle, often mango or mixed, sits on the side.

The halwa is the thing people compare. Some shops make it thick and grainy, others loose and glossy with ghee, and a few colour it a deeper orange. A good puri should be puffed, crisp at the edges and soft inside, and it should arrive straight from the oil. If a plate sits waiting on the counter, the puri goes leathery within minutes.

Most places also sell extra puris by the piece, halwa by weight to take home, and lassi or doodh patti to drink with it.

Where is the best halwa puri in Karachi?

Tooso, Bahadurabad

Tooso, at 25 Commercial Area on Alamgir Road in Bahadurabad, has been serving since 1976 and is the name that comes up first for many Karachiites. It runs from about 7 am to midnight according to its listings, but the halwa puri is a morning dish and the weekend queue is real. Food guides praise the puris for being fresh and crisp and the setting for being cleaner than a roadside stall. Reviewers also say it costs more than the average neighbourhood shop. It has a Defence branch too, but Bahadurabad is the original.

Fresco Sweets, Aram Bagh

Fresco, on Shahrah-e-Liaquat by Aram Bagh, has been trading for more than fifty years and is the old-city choice. It is a sweet shop first, which shows in the halwa, and its plate comes with spicy bhujia and chholay ka salan. One listing puts its halwa puri hours from about 5 am, so it suits an early start before a walk round Saddar and Burns Road.

Dhamthal, Federal B Area

Dhamthal's Gulshan-e-Ali branch, at Ayesha Manzil in Block 7 of Federal B Area, is known for cooking in pure desi ghee, which gives the puris a richer smell and flavour. It also sells biscuits and pastries, so it is easy to take something home. Listings give early-morning opening.

Nasir Sweets, Water Pump

Nasir Sweets at Fareed Square near Water Pump is a neighbourhood favourite in Federal B Area, busiest on Sunday mornings, with crisp puris and chana. It is a good alternative to Dhamthal if you are coming from Gulshan or North Nazimabad.

United King, North Nazimabad

The United King bakery on Sher Shah Suri Road, Block D, North Nazimabad, is one of the area's older bakeries and serves halwa puri in the morning, roughly 7:30 am to 12:30 pm in its listing. It is the easy choice if you are staying north of the centre.

Boat Basin, Clifton

Boat Basin has two well-known breakfast names, Dera and Baithak, both serving halwa puri and cheese paratha at outdoor tables. The appeal here is the open-air seating and the sea breeze rather than an old recipe, and it draws a younger, mixed crowd. Our Boat Basin food street guide covers the strip.

DHA

In Defence, Desi Gali in Bukhari Commercial, Phase 6, does a fuller, pricier desi breakfast with dum qeema and lassi alongside the halwa puri. Master Juice in Phase 2 is a roadside juice shop that also serves a full halwa puri nashta in the morning.

Two more worth knowing

Ideal Bakery, near Jinnah Hall by Hill Park, is popular with students and has a separate dining hall. Abbas Nashta in Sharafabad is listed as opening at about 3:30 am, which makes it one of the few places serving properly fresh puris before Fajr.

When should you go for halwa puri in Karachi?

Sunday morning is the city's halwa puri hour. Families come out from about 8 am, and by 10 the best-known places have a queue at the counter and no free tables. To eat well and quickly:

  1. Arrive by 7 or 7:30 am on Sunday. You get the first batches of halwa and the puri comes straight from the karahi.
  2. Or go on a weekday, when the same shops are calm, though a few quieter places only make puris in quantity at the weekend.
  3. Avoid the last hour before closing. Shops that stop frying at midday may be serving the end of the halwa.
  4. Public holidays and the days after Eid are as busy as a Sunday.

In Ramadan the pattern changes completely. Daytime breakfast trade largely stops and hours shift towards the evening and sehri, so check before you go. Our Karachi in Ramadan guide explains what stays open.

How much does halwa puri cost in Karachi?

It is still one of the cheapest full meals in the city, but prices have risen sharply since the food-blog lists most people quote were written, and the older figures you will find online are now well out of date. A neighbourhood shop is cheaper than Tooso or a DHA restaurant, and an extra puri or a glass of lassi adds a little each time. Check the price board at the counter before you order, and carry cash, since many halwa puri shops do not take cards.

How do you order and eat it?

  • Order a plate per person and extra puris for the table. Most people want a third puri.
  • Ask for both curries if the shop makes chana and aloo separately. The sour potato cuts the sweetness of the halwa.
  • Eat it in the order you like. Some tear puri into the chana first and save the halwa for last, others mix the two in one bite.
  • Take halwa home. Shops weigh it into boxes, and it keeps for a day or two.
  • Go easy if you have a long drive ahead. It is a heavy, oily breakfast, and better before a slow day than before a motorway run.

If you are worried about street food on a short trip, eat at a busy shop where the oil and the puris turn over quickly, and see our guide to whether street food in Pakistan is safe.

Which halwa puri place should you choose?

Pick by where you are staying rather than crossing the city on a Sunday morning.

  • Staying in Saddar or the old city: Fresco, then walk on to Burns Road and Empress Market.
  • PECHS, Bahadurabad or Tariq Road: Tooso, early.
  • Gulshan, Federal B Area or North Nazimabad: Dhamthal, Nasir Sweets or United King.
  • Clifton or DHA, or with small children: Boat Basin or Desi Gali, where seating is easier.

Halwa puri suits anyone who enjoys a rich, sweet and savoury breakfast and does not mind a plastic chair or a short wait. It is less suited to a light eater or anyone on a strict diet, and for them a bun maska and chai at a bakery is the gentler Karachi breakfast. More ways to eat your way round the city are on our experiences page and in our Karachi street food guide.
