Gilgit-Baltistan in Spring: Blossom Season Guide

Gilgit-Baltistan in spring is blossom season. Apricot, cherry, almond and apple trees flower from March into early May, starting around Gilgit and the low villages, reaching central Hunza and the Skardu valley from late March to mid-April, and finishing in Gojal, Khaplu and the higher side valleys in late April. The days are mild, the nights cold, and the high passes still shut, so a spring trip is about the valleys, not Deosai or Khunjerab.

When is blossom season in Gilgit-Baltistan?

The bloom moves uphill and northwards as the valleys warm. Apricots go first, with white and pale pink flowers on bare branches, and cherries follow a week or so later in the same village. Almonds can open earliest of all, and apples and pears come last, carrying the colour into late April.

In any one village the trees are at their best for about two to three weeks, but across the region there is blossom somewhere from March to early May. The timing shifts with the winter just gone: a warm March brings everything forward, a late cold spell holds it back, and a hard frost at the wrong moment can brown the flowers overnight.

The windows in the table come from several years of reports, and they don't always agree to the week. Treat them as the centre of a range, and ask your hotel for photos in the days before you travel.

Hunza and Nagar

Hunza is the best known blossom destination in Pakistan, and for good reason: terraces of apricot trees below snow peaks, with the forts of Baltit and Altit in the middle of them. Central Hunza is usually at its best in the first half of April, while Gojal, colder at the same height, peaks in the second half. The Nagar villages across the river, which get less winter sun, can flower a few days later than their height would suggest.

Skardu, Kachura and Shigar

The Skardu valley flowers at much the same time as central Hunza, from late March to mid-April. The contrast is what makes it different: pink and white orchards against a dry, sandy valley floor, bare mountains and the grey Indus, rather than Hunza's terraces.

• Around Skardu town, the orchards in the villages on the valley floor flower first.
• Kachura, at about 2,500 metres, follows a little later, with orchards on the slopes around both lakes.
• Shigar, an hour north, has orchards all around the restored fort and the villages behind it. The fort garden in flower is one of the classic spring pictures of Baltistan.

Khaplu and the higher valleys

Khaplu, about three hours up the Shyok from Skardu at 2,600 metres, flowers later than Skardu, through April and often at its best in the second half of the month. It is much quieter, and a night at Khaplu lets you see the orchards around the palace in the early light.

Above it, the Hushe valley and the other high villages flower from late April into early May. The road up is a jeep road, and early in spring it can still be affected by snow and meltwater, so ask in Khaplu before setting out.

If your trip falls in the second half of April and central Hunza and Skardu are past their best, this is where to go: upward, to Gojal or Khaplu.

Gilgit: the first to flower

Gilgit, at about 1,500 metres, is lower and warmer than the valleys most visitors come to see, so its orchards flower first, during March, while Hunza is still bare. On its own it is not a blossom destination, but if you arrive early in the season, the villages around the town and along the road to Hunza are where you will see the first flowers. The Kargah Buddha, carved into a cliff about 10 km west of the town, makes a gentle first afternoon.

Which roads and passes are open in spring?

The high routes are still closed in spring, so plan the journey before you plan the orchards.

• Karakoram Highway: open all year and the only road route from Islamabad in March and April. Spring rain brings slides, particularly in Kohistan: in March 2026 slides closed it between Pattan and Bursin, stranding vehicles on both sides.
• Babusar road: closed by snow until late May or June. It opened on 25 May in 2026.
• Skardu road: open all year, but rockfall is common in wet spells.
• Khunjerab Pass: closed to visitors until about early May.
• Deosai: under snow until about late June.
• Fairy Meadows and the Naltar lakes: snowbound in March and April.

Flights are the other variable. Spring is the wettest time of year in the valleys, and low cloud grounds flights to Gilgit, and sometimes to Skardu, more often than in summer or autumn. How cold is spring in Gilgit-Baltistan?

Days are pleasant; nights are cold.

What that means in practice:

• Pack for cold evenings: a warm jacket, a hat, gloves and thermals for sleeping, even if the afternoon feels like summer.
• Ask how the room is heated. Not every guesthouse heats well, and some places that close for the winter have not reopened by late March.
• Expect showers and fresh snow on the peaks. March is Skardu's wettest month, and a late snowfall on the valley floor is possible early in the season.
• Take the sun seriously. It burns quickly at this altitude, even on a cool day.

Check the news before you go

Spring 2026 began badly. In early March, violent protests in Gilgit and Skardu after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader led to curfews in both cities, and more than 20 people were killed. Mobile and internet services were suspended and Skardu flights stopped until the curfew there was lifted on 12 March. The same month, supply problems led the Gilgit administration to ration petrol. By the peak of the blossom in April, visitors were back in the valleys.

Is spring the right time for your trip?

Spring suits couples, photographers and anyone who wants the valleys calm and at their prettiest. Hotels are generally cheaper than in summer, the lanes are quiet, and the snow on the peaks makes every view sharper.

It suits you less if you want the high places. Khunjerab, Deosai, Fairy Meadows and Babusar are all closed, and the cold nights can be hard going for small children and older parents in a poorly heated room.
