A Fairy Meadows bike trip is really two journeys: a long ride on the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge, and a shorter, harder decision about what to do with the bike once you get there. The usual answer is to leave it at Raikot and take a local jeep to Tato. Some riders have taken their bikes up the track themselves, but the rule is set by the locals at the bridge and has varied, so don't build your plan on it.

This guide covers the ride in, the bikes-on-the-track question, where riders leave their bikes, and the safety points that matter most on two wheels, including the UK advice for the highway.

The ride to Raikot Bridge

Raikot Bridge is on the KKH in Diamer, beyond Chilas on the way to Gilgit. It is a long way from Islamabad or Lahore, so riders need at least one overnight stop on the highway.

That route uses the stretch the UK government advises against all travel on: the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, via Battagram, Besham, Dasu and Sazin. Pakistani riders do use it. But it is a long road with a record of attacks on vehicles and passengers, regular landslides, and protest blockades, and a bike gives you less protection and less ability to turn round than a car. Our guide to riding and driving the Karakoram Highway covers road conditions, and Is the Karakoram Highway safe? goes through the security history section by section.

In summer there is an alternative: ride from Naran over Babusar Pass and down to Chilas, which avoids the Besham to Dasu section. The pass is at 4,173 m, the road beyond Naran is generally open from about mid-July to the end of September, and it is steep, with a reputation for brake failures on the descent. See Babusar Top versus the KKH.

Whichever way you ride, arrive at each stop in daylight. Night riding on the KKH is a bad idea on any vehicle.

Can you ride your bike to Tato?

Sources disagree, and that is the honest answer.

  • A 2018 account by two riders on Honda CRF trail bikes says they rode the roughly 16 km from Raikot to Tato, registered their bikes and passports at the checkpoint, and parked at the jeep area near the village. They describe the track as extremely rocky, steep and exposed, with no guardrails, and took between 45 minutes and two hours.
  • Forum answers from travellers say the locals at Raikot Bridge do not allow other vehicles, and that the track is for local jeeps only.

The track is run by the local jeep operators, and their rules decide it. Whatever was allowed in 2018, the Fairy Meadows track had a fatal jeep accident on 1 June 2026, when a jeep carrying six tourists and its driver fell into a ravine, and traffic on the road was restricted afterwards. Expect the operators to be cautious.

Our recommendation is simple. Plan to leave the bike at Raikot Bridge and take a jeep. If the operators do allow bikes when you arrive, a standard road bike or a loaded tourer is the wrong machine for the track, and even a trail bike needs dry weather and an experienced rider. Our Fairy Meadows jeep track guide covers the jeep option and Raikot Bridge explains the stand.

Where do riders leave their bikes?

Riders who have written about the trip mention these options at Raikot and on the track:

  • A hotel at Raikot Bridge with a parking compound. The Shangrila hotel there is the one forum posters name.
  • A police post near the bridge. One account describes a police officer who let riders store luggage at his house while they hiked.
  • A small shop at the jeep parking area, described by one poster as a safe spot.

Whichever you pick, agree it before you leave, photograph the bike and its position, take the key and any luggage you can carry, and don't leave gear on the bike. Cover and lock it. Our Tato village guide covers what is at the top of the track.

What to carry for the walk

After Tato it is a 5 km footpath of about three to four hours to the meadows at around 3,300 m. Pack as for the hike rather than the ride: a small daypack, warm layers, rain gear and cash. You can leave riding gear with the bike. See what to pack for Fairy Meadows.

Is it a good trip by bike?

The ride is the attraction, and it suits experienced riders who are comfortable with long days, rain and rockfall. It does not suit anyone new to mountain riding, anyone riding pillion with a lot of luggage, or anyone on a tight schedule. Build in a spare day for landslides and closures.

If you want the meadows without the highway risk, consider flying to Gilgit and hiring a car, then dropping your bike plans for this trip. Our travel guide has more on planning in the north.
