Subri Lake: the quickest outing
Subri Lake, also known as Langarpura Lake, is not a lake in the usual sense. It is a wide, slow stretch of the Jhelum where a cloudburst reshaped the riverbank in 1975, about 8 to 10 km south-east of the city on the Chakothi road. The setting is more river than lake, with water on one side and hills on the other.
There is little here beyond the view and a place to sit, so treat it as a picnic stop rather than a destination. It suits families with young children or older relatives who want fresh air without a long drive, and it fits easily either side of lunch. Dhani Waterfall: a stop on the way up the Neelum road
Dhani, sometimes called Dhani Noseri Waterfall, is a roadside waterfall about 38 km from Muzaffarabad on the road into the Neelum Valley, at around 1,090 metres. It is usually described as the highest waterfall in the valley, though it is a modest one to look at: a drop of around 15 metres beside the road, with a tea stall or two nearby.
It works best as a stop rather than a trip in its own right, either on the way to Patika and beyond or as a short there-and-back outing when you don't have time for the full Neelum road. The road narrows in places past this point, so drive it in daylight and don't rush the descent. Pir Chinasi: the full-day viewpoint
Pir Chinasi is a hilltop shrine and meadow at about 2,900 metres, roughly 30 km east of the city up a paved road of more than 30 hairpin bends. Allow one to one and a half hours each way, so with time at the top it is a full day rather than a quick loop.
It is the one outing on this list that feels like the mountains rather than a stop along a road, with views back over Muzaffarabad and the ridgelines around it. Chikar and Zalzal Lake: the farthest trip
Chikar is a small hill town at around 1,600 metres, the headquarters of Chikar tehsil in Hattian Bala district, on a branch road that leaves the Muzaffarabad–Chakothi highway and climbs into the hills. It is about 46 km from the city, roughly an hour and a half's drive.
Zalzal Lake, also called Earthquake Lake, sits just beyond Chikar, about 55 km out. It formed when the 2005 earthquake brought down a mountainside that dammed two streams, and the lake it left behind now stretches close to 3 km between green hills. Most visitors see Chikar and the lake together, since one lies just past the other on the same road.
The road through Chikar is paved for most of its length, but it is a mountain route through a district that saw serious landslide damage in 2005, so conditions can change after heavy rain. Check locally before you set out, especially outside the main travel season. Given the distance, this is a full day trip: leave Muzaffarabad early and plan to be back before dark.
Which day trip fits the time you have
If you have an hour or two free, take Subri Lake. It needs almost no planning and works at any time of day.
If you are already driving up the Neelum road, stop at Dhani rather than making a separate trip for it; on its own it is a pleasant half hour, not a day out.
If you have a full day and want one real mountain trip, Pir Chinasi is the strongest single choice near Muzaffarabad. It is the only outing here that gives you a proper high viewpoint without an overnight stay.
Chikar and Zalzal Lake are worth the distance if you have already done Pir Chinasi, or if you would rather see a quieter part of the Jhelum Valley than another viewpoint. Keep it for a day when you can leave early, because the return drive leaves less daylight margin than the others.
