Chitral to Mastuj is about 107 to 120 km by road, depending on the source, and the drive takes anywhere from four hours in good conditions to six or seven on a bad day. The road runs north up the Mastuj river through Booni and Reshun and is the first part of the Chitral to Shandur Pass road. It is being rebuilt, and in 2026 it has been cut by floods and blocked by protests, so the road is more of a variable than the distance is.

How long does the drive from Chitral to Mastuj take?
Sources put it between two extremes. One traveller guide puts the trip at about 4 hours; another says the distance is almost 120 km but took 6 to 7 hours; The Friday Times (July 2026) describes the main roads of Upper Chitral as severely dilapidated, with journeys that should take two hours stretching into six-hour ordeals.
For planning, we would allow six hours from Chitral to Mastuj and treat four as a bonus. The reasons are the roadworks, the single-lane sections and the delays after flood or landslide, which can add hours at a time. Start in the early morning, and make Mastuj your destination for the day rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else.
What is the road like, stage by stage?
- Chitral to Booni. Reports describe this as paved but under construction, with bad patches. The road passes Kuragh and Reshun, two places that have made the news this year, and the Booni turn.
- Booni to Mastuj. About two hours by jeep according to one guide. Beyond the village of Buni the surface is reported as a dirt track that is sometimes only one vehicle wide, with roadworks in places.
- Mastuj onwards. The road towards Shandur Pass is dirt, and a further two to three hours; see the Shandur Pass open or closed guide and the Chitral to Gilgit via Shandur route if that is your plan.
The whole route is officially the 172 km Chitral–Shandur Road, which runs from Chitral to the pass. Mastuj is about two thirds of the way along.
What happened on the road in 2026?
Three events are worth knowing, because they show what the road is prone to.
- Flood damage, early August. Flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods in early August cut Upper Chitral off. Chitral Today reported the Chitral–Mastuj road closed for two days after the river eroded it near Kuragh, reopening on 5 August. Heavy rain and landslides at Parwak also blocked the Booni–Mastuj road for about 16 hours, stranding more than 150 vehicles.
- Roadworks. Local commentators have raised concerns about rockfall protection and bridge design on the new road, warning that flood and rockfall risk is high in July and August at places including Reshun, Kuragh and Parwak.
- Protest closure, 29 August. Residents at Reshun blocked the road for about 24 hours over electricity, opening it for a short time to let travellers through. Expect protests to cause the odd closure.
What vehicle do you need?
A 4x4 is the recommended vehicle for Chitral to Mastuj, and we would not take a low sedan beyond Booni. Hiring a jeep and driver in Chitral is the normal way to do it; our Chitral jeep rental guide covers what to ask.
A coach service, Hindukush Express, announced a Chitral–Mastuj route in June 2026 with a stop at Booni, linked to its Islamabad and Peshawar coaches. We could not find fares or a timetable, so ask at the Chitral terminal before relying on it.
One habit that saves the day: check the road that morning
Roads here change overnight in the summer flood season. Before you set off, ask your hotel in Chitral, or a driver who used the road that morning, about Kuragh, Reshun and Parwak, and be ready to turn back or stay a night. Is it safe?
The Chitral to Mastuj road is not itself on the UK government's list of areas it advises against (advice updated 22 September 2026), but the ways in are. The UK advises against all travel on the N-45 from Mardan to Chitral city, including the Kalash valleys, and against all travel within 10 miles of the Afghan border, which matters if you go on beyond Mastuj into the Yarkhun valley. Pakistani travellers do visit Upper Chitral and Shandur. Check local news, the police and the road situation before you go. Overseas visitors should read their own government's advice, because it can void travel insurance.
Is it worth the drive?
If you are heading for Shandur, Yarkhun or the Broghil valley, this road is the only way and the drive is part of the trip. If you only want a mountain day out from Chitral, the road is slow enough that Mastuj alone is not worth eight or more hours in a car.
