A Chitral bike trip is a serious ride rather than a casual weekend run. The tarmac is good in places, but the Lowari Tunnel has a long-standing restriction on motorcycles, the road beyond Chitral town is rough or under reconstruction, and fuel stops thin out quickly. The best window is roughly June to October, and the route also sits inside areas the UK government advises against visiting, so read the safety section before you plan.

This guide covers the route from Islamabad, the tunnel rule, what each road stretch is like, where to fuel, when to ride and who should not attempt it.

What is the route from Islamabad to Chitral by bike?

Most riders go up the M-1 motorway to the Swat Expressway, then on to Chakdara and Dir, over the Lowari Tunnel and down the Chitral River through Drosh. The distance from Islamabad is roughly 390 to 400 km. Allow a full day, longer if the tunnel holds you up. Online route calculators show about two and a half hours from Islamabad to Chakdara, a similar time on to Dir, and about three from Dir to Chitral without stops.

One practical point: motorcycles are not allowed on Pakistan's motorways, and riders have reported that this includes larger bikes. Check which section of the M-1 you can use and where to join the old GT Road instead. Our guide to Islamabad to Chitral by road describes the car route in more detail.

Can motorbikes go through the Lowari Tunnel?

This is the question that decides the whole trip, and the answer has depended on when you ask. Dawn reported in 2018 that tourists and local riders were told motorcycles were banned from the tunnel and that two-wheelers had to be loaded into other vehicles at what residents called heavy rent. A travel guide for riders still says you may be asked to load the bike onto a pickup truck to cross, and that negotiating on larger bikes may sometimes work.

We could not find a current official rule. In early August 2026 the tunnel was reopened to all types of traffic after a proposal to close it for 12 hours a day was withdrawn, and operating rules were to be agreed between the district administration and the National Highway Authority. That announcement is about traffic generally and does not say motorcycles may ride through. Ask at the tunnel's Dir-side entrance, or ask your operator, before you assume either way.

The old Lowari Pass road over the top is at about 3,100 m and is described as dangerous. It is blocked by snow from roughly late November to the end of May. We would not plan a trip around riding it.

If the bike must be loaded, expect to pay locally, negotiate before loading, and strap and protect the bike yourself. A pickup crosses the tunnel in one direction at a time, so allow extra time.

What are the roads like?

Dir to Chitral

Tarmac, but with tunnel queues, trucks and, in places, damage from landslides and floods. In August 2026 flash floods destroyed bridges at several points near Chitral, and NHA restored the Chitral to Dir road through an alternative passage where a bridge had gone. Ask the day before about the current state.

Chitral to the Kalash valleys

The Kalash valleys open about 20 km south of Chitral town, and the roads up to Bumburet (about 36 km from Chitral), Rumbur (about 32 km) and Birir (about 34 km) are narrow and steep. A 4x4 is the recommended vehicle, which tells you what to expect on two wheels: loose stone, no guard rails and little room to pass. Our Kalash Valley guide covers the villages.

Chitral to Mastuj and Shandur

The Chitral to Shandur road is about 150 to 170 km depending on the source, and is under reconstruction as a national highway project. A July 2026 report put the work at roughly 30 to 48 percent complete across four packages, with completion pencilled in for December 2026. Sources describe Chitral to Mastuj as a rough road that takes many hours, and the stretch to Shandur Top as rocky and steep, suited to 4x4 vehicles. In August 2026 the Chitral to Shandur road was closed for days by floods. See our Chitral to Mastuj road guide and Shandur Pass guide.

Where do you get fuel?

The fuel advice for this region comes down to one rule: fill up whenever you can. Chitral town has the widest choice. Reports for riders and drivers on the Chitral to Gilgit side mention fuel at Booni and Mastuj, and, once you cross, at Gupis and Phander. Pumps in side valleys can be few and can run dry, and one pump in Lower Chitral was damaged in the August 2026 floods.

  • Fill the tank in Chitral before heading up the valley, and again at Booni and Mastuj.
  • Carry a spare litre or two in a proper container if your bike has a small tank.
  • Use well-known brands where you can, such as PSO, Shell, Attock or Go.
  • Carry cash, as card machines are rare and Bumburet has no ATM that we could find.

When is the best time to ride?

June to October is the practical window. The old Lowari road is blocked from late November to late May, but the tunnel keeps the main route open all year. Shandur is generally closed in winter, typically November to April, according to rider guides. Do not ride in the monsoon weeks of July and August without checking the weather, because the August 2026 floods and landslides cut the road in many places. September and early October are often the steadiest months. See our best time to visit Chitral.

Should you ride it yourself or go with a tour?

An escorted bike tour carries a support vehicle, spare parts and local knowledge of the tunnel and check posts. One operator's 15-day Kalash and Karakoram motorbike programme runs from April to September on 125 cc bikes with a support vehicle, guide and mechanic. That tells you the standard: small, reliable bikes, a mechanic and a back-up vehicle.

Riding alone suits experienced riders who have done mountain routes, carry their own tools, and can lift a dropped bike on a slope. If you have never ridden an unpaved mountain road, Chitral is not the place to learn.

Is it safe to ride to Chitral?

The UK government's Pakistan travel advice, updated on 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir, to Swat, and along the N45 from Mardan to Chitral city, which includes the Kalash valleys. It advises against all but essential travel to Malakand. That is the road a Chitral ride follows. A police attack at Laram Top in Lower Dir on 16 July 2026 killed three officers.

Pakistani riders still make the trip, and festivals in the valleys have gone ahead under tight security. A lone motorbike is more exposed than a coach: you are slow on a mountain road and easy to stop. Check local news and police advice before each day, avoid riding after dark, and register your plans with someone you trust. If you hold a foreign passport, your government's advice may say not to go, and that can void insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride a motorbike through the Lowari Tunnel?

Riders have reported that motorcycles were banned from riding through and had to be loaded onto a pickup. We could not find a current official rule, so ask at the tunnel before you set out.

Is Chitral good for a bike trip?

It is rewarding for experienced riders in summer and autumn, but the roads beyond Chitral are rough and fuel is limited. It is not a first mountain ride.

When is the best time for a Chitral bike trip?

June to October is the usual window. Avoid the heaviest monsoon weeks, when floods and landslides close roads.

Where is the last petrol pump before Shandur?

Reports mention fuel at Booni and Mastuj on the Chitral side, with Gupis and Phander on the Gilgit side. Fill up at every chance and carry a spare.

Do I need a licence or permit?

Carry your CNIC and licence. Foreign riders may need a permit or NOC for parts of Chitral, which an operator usually arranges.

Is it safe to ride to Chitral?

The UK advises against all travel along much of the route, while Pakistani riders still go. Check current local advice before each day's ride.
