A weekend trip from Lahore costs mostly two things: petrol for the drive, and one night in a hotel. For Khewra Salt Mine, about 200 km away, the whole trip can be a long day out. For Murree, at roughly 400 to 450 km each way, fuel alone can run to about Rs 27,000 for the round trip in an average car, before the room. The fuel and toll numbers to use
Two numbers are shared by all three trips.
- Petrol was about Rs 387 a litre at the end of September 2026. The government revises it regularly, so check the latest price before you leave.
- The M-2 toll for a car, jeep or taxi on the full Lahore to Islamabad motorway was Rs 1,430 from July 2026, according to NHA figures reported in the press. You pay less if you leave at an earlier interchange, and the NHA's toll calculator gives the exact amount.
To turn distance into rupees, divide by the km per litre your car really gets, multiply by the price, and double it for the return. For example, a car doing about 12 km a litre (an assumption, so use your own) uses about 17 litres for 200 km, roughly Rs 6,500 one way, and about 70 litres for an 850 km Murree round trip, roughly Rs 27,000. A hatchback that does better will cost less, and a large SUV more.
Khewra Salt Mine: the cheapest trip
Khewra is about 200 km from Lahore, around two and a half hours by the M-2 and the Lilla interchange, so it works as a long day trip or an easy overnight. Our Khewra Salt Mine guide covers the route and the visit.
Costs are small:
- Tickets. Sources for 2026 differ: one lists Rs 430 for adults without the train and Rs 680 with it, with reduced rates for students, children and seniors, while another gives lower figures. Bring more cash than you expect and pay the posted price at the gate.
- Petrol and toll, as above, less than for Murree.
- A night nearby, if you want one, is optional.
For a family, this is often the lowest-cost weekend from Lahore, and there is no need to book a hotel.
Murree: the most popular, and the most variable
Murree is where costs swing most, because it is the closest hill station to the plains and everyone goes at once.
- Fuel and tolls are the biggest fixed cost from Lahore. Distances quoted range from about 393 km on the GT Road to about 449 km on the motorway, so pick the route and price it.
- A room for one night. Online listings and hotel sites in 2026 put budget hotels at roughly Rs 4,000 to 8,000 a night and mid-range at roughly Rs 8,000 to 15,000, with weekends much higher than weekdays.
- Food and extras depend on where you eat, and tourist-strip prices are higher than in the side streets.
Two habits help. Go on a Saturday and Sunday only if you must, because midweek rooms cost noticeably less, and book the hotel before you drive: on peak weekends the road slows to a crawl, and finding a room on arrival is hard. Fort Munro: a long drive for a short stay
Fort Munro is a hill station in Punjab's Dera Ghazi Khan district. Distances from Lahore are reported from about 392 km to more than 500 km, and drive times from 7 to 8 hours, via the M-2, Multan and the Indus Highway. That is a long way for one night.
- Fuel is therefore the largest line, comparable to Murree's.
- Rooms. Hotel listings in 2026 show a range: one property listed from about Rs 7,000 a night, another from about Rs 12,000 for a deluxe room. Options are fewer than in Murree, so book ahead.
Fort Munro is a poor fit for a short weekend from Lahore unless you leave early on Saturday and are happy to spend most of the day driving. It is better with a long weekend. A worked example for a family of four
Add up, for a car trip to Murree:
- Petrol for about 850 km: roughly Rs 27,000 at 12 km a litre.
- Toll: Rs 1,430 each way for the full M-2, so about Rs 2,860 for the return.
- One night in one mid-range room: roughly Rs 8,000 to 15,000.
- Meals and extras: your own estimate, added on top.
