Murree Trip Cost: Budget for Hotels, Food and Transport

The biggest part of a Murree trip cost is the room. In September 2026 the cheapest rooms listed on the big booking sites started from about Rs 4,500 a night, comfortable mid-range hotels were roughly Rs 10,000 to 16,000, and the upscale resort at Bhurban started around Rs 30,000. Getting there by car from Islamabad adds roughly Rs 6,500 to 7,500 in fuel and tolls for the round trip. All of it rises sharply on summer weekends, at Eid and when it snows.

Murree can be a cheap day out or an expensive weekend; the same town covers both. This guide breaks the costs down by budget level, shows where prices jump, and covers the smaller costs of parking, rides and getting about, with the year for every figure, because prices here change quickly.

All figures are rough, from 2025–26 sources, and change often. Treat them as a guide to planning, not a quote.

Getting there and back

Your own car

Murree is about 64 km from Islamabad. With some driving around the hills once you are there, a weekend trip is typically 150 to 200 km in total. A family car in hilly traffic might do 10 to 12 km a litre, so budget for roughly 15 to 18 litres. At about Rs 390 a litre, the price in late September 2026, that is around Rs 6,000 to 7,000. Petrol prices were being revised every few days in 2026, so check before you go.

Add the toll: Rs 300 for a car at the Phulgran toll plaza on the Murree Expressway, under the rates in force from 10 July 2026, and budget for paying it each way.

Ride-hailing and hired cars

The intercity services on the ride-hailing apps cover Islamabad to Murree. In September 2026 one of them suggested a fare of about Rs 2,000 one way, agreed before you set off. A car with a driver for the whole day costs more but saves the parking hunt and lets everyone rest on the way home; agree the price, including waiting time and fuel, in advance.

Vans and buses

Public vans and coasters from Faizabad and Pir Wadhai in Rawalpindi are by far the cheapest way up, at a small fraction of the cost of a car. Fares move with fuel prices, so ask at the stand. Once in Murree, the electric buses launched in July 2026 charge a flat Rs 20.

Hotels: what each budget buys

Room rates depend on three things: the area, the day of the week, and the season. These ranges come from what the booking sites were listing for Murree in late September 2026, a quiet season, converted at about Rs 278 to the US dollar.

• Basic, from about Rs 4,500 to 8,000. Simple rooms in older hotels and guesthouses, many along Cart Road below the Mall. Clean enough and central, but plain, often without views, and sometimes without parking.
• Mid-range, roughly Rs 10,000 to 16,000. Newer hotels in town and on the edges, around Kashmir Point, Pindi Point and Jhika Gali, often with views, heating and parking.
• Upscale, from about Rs 30,000. The Pearl-Continental at Bhurban started at around this level in September 2026, and averaged roughly twice that in July.

How much do prices jump at peak times?

A lot, and fast. The same room can cost far more on a Saturday in July than on a Tuesday in October, and at the busiest times the cheap rooms are the first to go.

The dates that push prices up:

1. Summer weekends, from May to August.
2. Eid holidays and the week around 14 August.
3. The school winter holidays at the end of December and New Year's Eve.
4. Snow. The weekend after a good snowfall is the most expensive and crowded time of the year.

The snowstorm of January 2022 is still remembered for reports of hotels charging many times their normal rates. A fact-check later found that some of the viral claims were wrong, but that some overcharging did happen, including for snow chains, and people were arrested. Since then the administration has run regular price-control checks, fining shopkeepers who don't follow the official rate lists.

The practical lessons:

• Book in advance for any peak date, and get the rate in writing.
• Never arrive on a snow weekend without a booking. In January 2026 tourists were for a time allowed into Murree only with a confirmed hotel reservation.
• Go midweek if you can. It is the single biggest saving available.

Food

Eating out in Murree costs roughly what similar places cost in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with a premium on the Mall, at the viewpoints and at hotels. Tea and snacks at tourist spots are priced for tourists, and room service is almost always dearer than walking to a restaurant.

A few ways to keep food costs sensible:

• Eat where local families eat, in the side streets off the Mall and around Jhika Gali, rather than at the busiest spots on the Mall itself.
• Check prices before you order at stalls and smaller restaurants. Shops are required to display official rate lists for basic items.
• Carry water and snacks for the car, especially in winter, when a long jam can leave you on the road for hours.

Parking and small costs

Parking is where day-trippers lose the most time, and some money.

• Hotel parking is often free for guests but not always. Ask when you book, and ask where the car will actually be.
• Public parking in designated areas and plazas charges a fee, which varies by location and time. Keep small notes ready.
• Illegal parking is expensive: under the winter traffic plans, cars parked on the main roads, including the Mall, are impounded.

The smaller costs of a day in Murree:

• Kashmir Point is free. There is no official entry ticket, whatever anyone tells you.

• Horse and pony rides, and small rides for children, are informal; agree the price before anyone gets on.
• Snow chains, if you need them, are much cheaper in Islamabad or Rawalpindi than in Murree once snow is falling.

Sample budgets

These show how the pieces add up for a couple driving from Islamabad for one night, before food and shopping. They use the 2026 figures above.

A family of four adds a larger room or two rooms, and more tickets. A snow weekend or Eid can push the room line well beyond these figures.

Is it worth paying more?

Sometimes. Paying more for the right location often saves money and time elsewhere: a mid-range hotel with its own parking can save an hour of circling and a parking fee, and a room within walking distance of the Mall means you never move the car at all.

The upscale resorts at Bhurban and Lower Topa are worth it if you want quiet and space and plan to stay put. They are poor value if you will spend all day on the Mall and only sleep there.

For most travellers the best value is simply the calendar: the same mid-range room on a weekday in October costs much less, and gives you a much better Murree, than on a summer Saturday.
