Lahore to Fort Munro is roughly 520 km by road, and a realistic drive time is seven to nine hours with stops. The usual route runs down the M-3 and M-4 motorways to Multan, then south-west to Dera Ghazi Khan and up into the Sulaiman range for the last 85 km. Fort Munro is the only hill station in southern Punjab, at about 1,970 metres, so most people treat it as an overnight trip and not a same-day return.
Published distances differ a lot (some sites say about 390 km, others over 520). The higher figure is the one that adds up: Lahore to Multan is about 333 km by motorway, and Fort Munro is roughly 185 km beyond Multan.

The route, stage by stage
- Lahore to Multan, about 333 km. Take the M-3 from the M-2 junction to Abdul Hakeem, then the M-4 into Multan. This takes about four hours. Our guide to Lahore to Multan by road has the tolls, the fog warning and where to stop.
- Multan to Dera Ghazi Khan. Leave Multan on the highway heading west across the Chenab and Indus plains. It is flat, straight and busy with trucks and local traffic, and the pace is set by the slowest vehicle in front of you.
- Dera Ghazi Khan to Fort Munro, about 85 km. Fort Munro Road climbs into the Koh-e-Sulaiman range. It is generally described as smooth and maintained, with sharp turns and mountain curves near the top.
How long does it really take?
Most sites give seven to eight hours for a private car. That is a fair figure with a leisurely lunch and no delays, but plan for eight or nine if you are travelling on a Friday afternoon, before Eid, or in summer, when crowds head for Fort Munro to escape the plains heat.
A workable schedule for a family:
- Leave Lahore by 6 or 7 am
- Stop in Multan for lunch and prayers
- Reach Dera Ghazi Khan in the early afternoon
- Start the climb with at least three hours of daylight left
The mountain road is not a place to drive in the dark, particularly if you are not used to hill driving. If you leave Lahore late, stay the night in Multan or Dera Ghazi Khan and do the climb the next morning.
What is the road like?
The motorway to Multan is six lanes and fast, though fog in December and January closes sections. Beyond Multan the road narrows and gets busier, and the final climb is a hill road with bends and drop-offs on one side. It is fine for an ordinary car in dry weather, but drive slowly, keep to your side on blind bends and use a low gear on the way down.
Fuel up in Multan or Dera Ghazi Khan. Petrol stations get sparse once you are climbing, and mobile signal can fade in places.
Is the trip safe?
Fort Munro is in Dera Ghazi Khan district, Punjab, right on the edge of Balochistan. The UK government advises against all travel to Balochistan, and the western side of the range leads to Rakhni and Loralai, which are in Balochistan. Pakistani visitors do travel to Fort Munro from Punjab, but:
- Stay on the Punjab side and use the Dera Ghazi Khan approach.
- Check local news and current police advice before setting out, especially outside the summer season.
- Do not travel on towards Rakhni or into Balochistan.
- Foreign-passport holders should read their own government's advice, which may say not to go and can affect travel insurance.
