The best weekend getaways from Lahore to the mountains are Murree, about six hours by road; the Galiyat above Abbottabad, six and a half to seven hours; and Muzaffarabad and lower Neelum in Azad Kashmir, seven to eight hours. All three start the same way, on the M-2 motorway to Islamabad, before the roads split into the hills. Lahore is far enough from the mountains that a genuine weekend means leaving Friday night or very early Saturday, not Saturday after breakfast.

Why Lahore is a different trip from Islamabad
Almost everything written about weekend trips to the hills assumes an Islamabad starting point, because Islamabad is an hour from Murree and two and a half from the Galiyat. From Lahore, add the length of the M-2 motorway, 375 km, before any of that begins. A drive that is a pleasant hour and a half from Islamabad becomes the better part of a working day from Lahore.
That changes the maths for a weekend. Leaving Lahore at 7am on a Saturday and arriving in Murree by early afternoon still gives you an afternoon and a full Sunday morning. Leaving for Kashmir at the same time puts you into Muzaffarabad after dark, which is workable but tiring, and better avoided with children.
Murree: the trip that still fits a normal weekend
Murree is the only one of the three that comfortably fits a Saturday-morning departure and a Sunday-evening return. The route is the M-2 to Islamabad, then the Murree Expressway (E-75) north, about 440 km and around six hours door to door with a fuel and food stop. On a clear summer Saturday with no snow or landslide closures, most of that time is motorway.
- Leave Lahore by 6 or 7am to be in Murree for a late lunch.
- Mall Road, Pindi Point and Kashmir Point fill the afternoon.
- A short run out to Patriata (New Murree) for the chairlift, or up to the Galiyat for the evening, if you have a car for the whole weekend.
- Leave Murree by early afternoon on Sunday to be back in Lahore before the motorway gets busy with other weekend traffic returning to Punjab.

The Galiyat: worth a Friday-night start
Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia sit higher and further than Murree, reached from Islamabad via Abbottabad and the Hazara Motorway rather than through Murree town itself. From Lahore that adds up to about 465 km and six and a half to seven hours, which is workable in a single Saturday but leaves little energy for the walks the Galiyat is for.
The better plan is a Friday-night departure: leave Lahore after dinner, drive the motorway when it is quiet, and check into Nathia Gali by midnight or the early hours. That gives you all of Saturday and Sunday morning at altitude, with the Pipeline Track between Dunga Gali and Ayubia and a climb up Mushkpuri or Miranjani if legs allow. Kashmir: possible in a weekend, better over three days
Muzaffarabad and the lower Neelum valley are the furthest of the three, seven to eight hours from Lahore on a good run, longer if the roads through Islamabad or the Kohala bridge are busy. A strict Friday-night-to-Sunday-evening weekend is possible for a fit group willing to do most of the driving in darkness both ways, but it leaves very little time in the valley itself.
Kashmir works far better as a long weekend of three or four days, ideally with a public holiday attached. With that extra day you can push up the Neelum valley as far as Kel or even Arang Kel rather than stopping at Muzaffarabad, and drive home in daylight. Planning the drive itself
- Fuel up before you leave Lahore, and again in Islamabad or Rawalpindi before turning off the motorway. Fuel stations thin out once you leave the M-2.
- Book your first night before you leave. Weekend demand in Murree and the Galiyat is heavy from April to August and Eid weekends sell out fast.
- Share the driving. Six to eight hours each way is a long day for one driver, and the hill roads at the end need more concentration than the motorway.
- Check the weather and the road status for the last stretch, especially in winter, when snow can close the roads above Murree with little notice.
- Keep a return buffer. Arriving in Lahore late on a Sunday night before a Monday at work is a common reason people regret going the extra distance to Kashmir instead of stopping at Murree.
Which one should you pick?
If you genuinely only have Saturday and Sunday and want to be home for dinner on Sunday, go to Murree. It is close enough that the driving does not eat the weekend, and there is enough there for two days.
If you can leave Friday night, the Galiyat gives you cooler air, real walking and fewer crowds than Murree for a similar total drive. If you have three days rather than two, Kashmir is worth the extra distance: it is a different kind of landscape from Murree, greener and quieter, and the Neelum valley rewards the time it takes to reach.
