Swat in spring means blossom in the lower valley from late March into April, warm days and cold nights around Mingora, and an upper valley that is still shaking off winter. It is one of the quieter times to visit, well before the summer rush to Kalam, and one of the greenest.
The catch is that "Swat" covers a lot of altitude. Lower Swat, around Mingora and Saidu Sharif at about 970 metres, is in bloom and pleasant by late March. Kalam and the valleys above it, near 2,000 metres, are three to five weeks behind and can still see snow into April. When does Swat blossom?
Swat's lower valley is farmland and orchard country, and spring starts there first. Fruit trees around Mingora, Charbagh and Saidu Sharif come into blossom from late March, with cherry, apricot, peach and pear flowering over the following weeks into April. The exact timing shifts a little each year with the winter, so if blossom is the whole point of your trip, aim for the first half of April and expect it to have started, rather than fixing on a single date.
Wildflowers follow in the meadows and forest edges through April and into May, and the hillsides that are brown in late winter turn green quickly once the rain and warmth arrive.
What lower Swat looks like
Around Mingora and Saidu Sharif, March and April bring mild days, cool nights and the valley's fruit orchards in flower. What upper Swat looks like
Kalam, Bahrain, Madyan and the valleys around them sit far higher than Mingora, and spring arrives later. In March and early April, upper Swat can still be cold, with recent snow lingering on north-facing slopes and higher ground. By late April and into May it opens out: rivers run high with snowmelt, forests are a fresh green, and the crowds that fill Kalam in July and August have not yet arrived.

Why spring suits some trips better than summer
- Fewer people. Spring in Swat is well ahead of the school-holiday and Eid crowds that fill Kalam's roads and hotels in summer.
- Comfortable lower-valley heat. Mingora and Saidu Sharif can be uncomfortably hot by June; in March and April they are not.
- Green, not brown. The valley floor and hillsides are at their most colourful before the summer dust and the winter bareness.
- Roads are open. Unlike the passes further north, Swat's main roads do not close for winter, so spring is simply a quieter version of the same route.
