Is Saidu Sharif Airport open?
The airport itself exists and has handled aircraft in recent years, but it is not a dependable way to plan a trip. It closed in 2007 during fighting in Swat and stayed shut for 17 years before PIA resumed flights in March 2021, originally running twice a week. Service since then has come and gone with demand, aircraft availability and the wider security and operational picture in the region; in 2025 the Pakistan Air Force also made use of the airfield during a period of tension with India. As of when this guide was checked, Saidu Sharif does not appear among PIA's listed domestic routes, so treat any flight there as something to confirm case by case, not a fixed schedule.

The airports that actually work
Islamabad International (Fatima Jinnah International Airport, ISB). The realistic gateway for almost everyone visiting Swat by air. Peshawar (Bacha Khan International Airport). Closer on the map, but the road in is slower: through Mardan, Takht Bhai and the Malakand Pass rather than motorway, so the time saved over flying into Islamabad is smaller than the distance suggests. It's an option if you are already routing through Peshawar for other reasons.
Both airports have regular domestic and some international connections, unlike Saidu Sharif, and both are established, working options you can book with confidence.
Getting from Islamabad or Peshawar to Swat
From Islamabad, most travellers drive or take a hired car and driver up the M-1 and Swat Motorway, turning off at Chakdara for the last stretch into Mingora. Buses and coaches also run this route regularly. From Peshawar, the drive follows the M-1 towards Mardan before turning north through Malakand into the valley; it takes longer than the distance on a map suggests because it isn't all motorway.
Whichever airport you land at, budget the road leg as a proper travel day, not an afterthought, especially if your onward plan is Kalam or further up the valley, which adds several more hours beyond Mingora.
Should you wait for a Saidu Sharif flight?
Not for a plan that has to work. If a Saidu Sharif flight happens to be running and it suits your dates, it can save a long drive. But because service has stopped and restarted repeatedly since 2021, building an itinerary around it risks a cancelled trip. Book a flight into Islamabad or Peshawar as your primary plan, and treat a Saidu Sharif seat as a bonus if it is available and confirmed close to the date.
